Let me start by saying this: the food is excellent. However that’s where the good news ends. From the moment we walked in, the attitude towards guests (and especially those who are visitors to the area) is just downright awful. We walked in slightly ahead of our reservation time and were told it would be a few minutes as our table wasn’t quite ready - you could look around and see the restaurant was only about half occupied and there were plenty of tables available. So as earlier reservations came in after us although late, they were still seated. Finally another party came in with our same time slot and the hostess muttered “follow me” without looking at anyone in particular - when I said “who are you speaking to?” She then looked at me, pointed and with obvious disdain and in a raised voice said “I’m talking to YOU!” I’ve never seen such disrespect in tone or appearance, given her shaved head on on side and wearing yoga pants I shouldn’t have expected much - and that attitude from the hostess has been noted elsewhere in these reviews. The pace of the meal was leisurely but unfortunately that’s not a compliment. The waiter appeared to have half the restaurant to himself and apologized profusely as it was “slammed” - true for him but not for the restaurant in totality. It became readily apparent he was overwhelmed although doing his best as it was obvious he not only had to take orders, but also mix his own drinks at the bar, run food and clear/bus tables - this was confirmed when I said something to him about mixing his own drinks and he said that was part of his job here but he has no bartending experience so he was concerned if it came out alright. Obviously with the span and scope of his territory (and he was so polite and tried to do his best) someone’s dinner will suffer and sadly everyone’s did (even the hostess was running cocktails to tables) - from the time we sat down until the time the appetizer hit the table was 35-40 minutes. From previous negative reviews the restaurant blames everything from being busy to the height of tourism season but I call that malarkey: acknowledge what is obvious, you deliberately do not staff to provide an optimal guest experience and just trade on your name and historic presence within the context of the local area while simultaneously displaying an arrogance your customer experience can’t justify. There’s a reason you’re not featured on the best historic inns and restaurants in Manchester and it’s not that you’re so busy you can’t keep up, it’s that you choose not to be one. That’s sad.
Had a wonderful meal here tonight. Jaimie took expert care of my partner and I. The bronzini special was delicious and the atmosphere was romantic without feeling too stuffy.

Super beautiful restaurant, our waitress was lovely and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the chicken Marsala and it may be my favorite one I’ve had out. My significant other and I went for our anniversary and it was a very romantic pick

We really enjoyed this place. The food, service and environment was wonderful. The Tavern is a real throwback, serving since 1790, that’s a lot of history. For starters we had the elk sausage which was absolutely delicious! I have never eaten elk before and it was so flavorful. In addition we also had the Brie which was good. I ordered the pumpkin bisque which was so good. My girlfriend ordered the duck and I ordered the pot roast. The pot roast was ok but my girlfriend really enjoyed her duck. Our server Jessie was really good, quick and attentive. She helped with suggestions from the menu.

Fantastic meal! Our server (Laurie) if I remember correctly, was great. Definitely make a reservation so you don’t miss out! We had the baked Brie (which was surprisingly delicious) bc I don’t like Brie, the chicken pot pie, ugh so good and the pot roast was fantastic. Make that reservation now, you will not be disappointed. Also, the building is historic and super cool.

Food was amazing, with nice friendly service. It was standard yet elevated food, with a reasonable price. If your traveling through or new to the area a definite go to spot for a great dinner.
