Made a reservation for a Thursday night in April, but no need to do so. New space since the floods in 2023: tiny door and narrow staircase up to lovely space on 2nd and 3rd floors with a huge outdoor deck. I had the housemade black bean burger instead of the Korean Spicy Tofu, because I am a wimp. Fun cocktails, vegetarian and carnivore options as well. A great dinner stop between Boston and Montreal!

Derrick is the most personable bartender in Montpelier and I’m SO HAPPY that Hugo’s brought back my wedge salad. Love the vibe here. Love the live music. What a gem💜

Made a reservation through reservy for New Years eve about 4 days before the event. The only available seating was for 6:15pm. We were excited for the regular menu as on the website I did not notice a special menu for NYE. We arrived and were very excited as after our climb up the stairs, we were greeted with a lovely bar and a very pleasant hostess. Atmosphere was great but we were disappointed it was a prefix menu and we were not offered a menu while we were waiting for our table. We started on cocktails ordered from the bar. Our seating was over 1/2 hour past our reservation time- not Hugo's fault and we were very understanding as it was NYE. We were finally seated and began to be excited for the NYE menu. At 95$ we thought a bit pricy for Montpelier but for a special occasion we were very willing to splurge. Wish Hugo's had stayed with their regular menu. As each course was served we tried to make excuses. Starters; we were a part of 3. 2 of us ordered the warm brie, one the oysters. Serve came with 3 brie's and apologized and said they would be right back with the oysters. Meanwhile, only one of the brie cheese appetizers was "warm" the other was stone cold and there was only the tiniest wedge of a cold bread that felt stale and salt less. The appetizer arrived with a selection of mixed olives. Olives had no preparation other than being drained from jars, no removing the saltiness, no oil, no herbs. We noticed other customers had received their included flutes of proseco, but we figured we still had our bar cocktails when we were seated so maybe wait staff would bring later. Oysters did not arrive and we had to flag downwait staff to get the oysters that were delivered to table as other 1st course plates were removed. No chance to comment on the cold starter brie. As one of our dinners was still trying to enjoy their oysters- with out glass of proseco or fresh cocktail (our 1st drinks were long finished) the second course arrived. 2 butternut soups and a fenel-apple salad. Looking forward to the soup but still trying to finish oysters, a soup was passed to a companion dinerto taste while still 'hot'. Opps, not hot! Too thick. More like a room temperature butternut pudding. By this time we were hungry so we continued to make excuses, scraped our butternut puddings and shared and waited for wait staff. We saw the wait staff were trying and were young, unable to get us drinks from the bar. Main dishes; only risotto arrived hot. The steak was undercooked and rest of plate COLD. The scallops could have used 2 more minutes to cook and were plated on COLD accompaniments. The green beans were raw and crunch not cooked but still crisp the three of us were trying not to ruin a festive evening by complaining. Eventually received prosecco- in large wine glasses.
We hoped for best with dessert to have with our prosecco. The mousse was too cold and the chocolate layer was hard and impossible to eat. We asked to take home and were given boxes to dump our desserts into. Must say, later at home, once thawed- was most delicious thing we ate.
Wish Hugo's would have stuck to regular menu.
We would/will come again for the bar atmosphere- but on NYE- special menu was too ambitious and expensive .

Recommended Hugo's to my friends from Milan who really wanted steak. I understand there are some transitions going on (new chef training kitchen staff) so their dinners were a little underwhelming. But Hugo's is clearly committed to making the venue a go-to spot for locals and tourists alike. There is live music on the top floor and a friendly bar where even solo visitors (like me) feel at home. Worthy of a visit.

Our friend selected Hugo’s as the place to celebrate her 60th birthday. Hugo’s made it such a special night. Our group had quite a range of food sensitivities and questions about the menu and our server Leslie was so patient and helpful. The menu is a tight selection of simple but thoughtful dishes. I am quite the connoisseur of French onion soup and it was better than what I make at home. The cocktails were also delicious and diverse enough to complement whatever you picked from the menu. The maple crème brûlée that I ordered was nicely done: good texture on the custard, the sugar “glass” was perfectly caramelize to have the classic “crack” without being over cooked, and it was a balanced sweetness between the custard and the sugar topping. Leslie was so much fun and “real” to talk with. The price point is not “dirt cheap” but it is fairly priced for the ingredients and talented labor. Montpelier is lucky to have Hugo’s Bar and Grill. I hope they get to be here for many years.

Vegetarian options: Creative salads, vegetarian lasagna

Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free desserts, responded positively to less common restrictions on fermentation and sugar.

The food we ordered was served cold and the sandwich was burnt black. So much so it was inedible. They removed it from the bill. We were shocked it was even served to us.
The Wings were tasty but were pre cooked from another time and were served warm. definitely not out of the fryer.
Service was good and the dinning room is cozy and quaint but the layout was a bit quirky to us. Unlikely to give them another try.

I have loved this place - food is generally excellent and the staff is great. But the new menu (just out) is a disappointment - they used to have a variety of foods that were friendly to people with food sensitivities without that being the main point- this used to be my place to bring folks with gluten and/or dairy or vegetarian needs. Gone are the delicious pakoras, the bacon-wrapped scallops, the tuna nachos, the oyster happy hours, Now almost everything is sandwiches with French fries or some other version of gluten, dairy and potatoes. It would be so easy to deep fry with rice flour, to use gluten free beer in the beer batter, to offer sweet potato fries, and make it accessible to so many more people… I’m sad to lose this place… the food is still great, but the selection just isn’t there any more.

Top experience!! Already the terrace is great, the food very good. I had a really good steak. Friendly service, and prices are standard. The big plus is the salsa evening (Wednesday evening) with a very pleasant atmosphere.

roof top dining! fresh oysters!

The food was far below par for the price. The "crab cakes" had no crab, or flavor. They were fried breading all the way through. The waitress even agreed they had no crab, but did nothing to fix the situation. The fish tacos were mediocre, with a sad excuse for lettuce thrown under a deep fried piece of fish.

About all that can be said is it still looks nice from the last owner, and the fries were really good. The fries are about the only reason not to give it one star.
