What a wonderful steakhouse! We found this little gem while shopping. We wanted something more than the usual informal drab eateries that crowd the downtown streets. It was like stepping on to J P Morgan's personal train. Elegant but not pretentious. Our server was relaxed and very welcoming. He guided us through the steak menu in the most professional manner. The porterhouse was cooked perfectly. Unlike many servers, he explained the service charge without pushing us to extra tip. The service charge would be distributed equally to staff. This is our favorite restaurant whenever we come through town.

The food was outstanding! It's a nice and quiet environment, upscale and was the perfect 5 year anniversary celebratory dinner. We each had a beverage and enjoyed the loaded potato chips for an appetizer. I had the bacon wrapped filet mignon and my husband had the shrimp scampi. For dessert we shared a creme brulee. However, our waitress did not fit the restaurant. I'm not sure if she was new but honestly she was less than good. She was very quiet and we could hardly hear her. It took us 20 minutes after being seated for her to come over and take our drink order. She never once asked if my steak was cooked to my liking, nor did she ask how our meal was. The food was outstanding and definitely not part of the problem. She then somehow trips over her own feet and almost spills my husband dinner in his lap, moving the table and spilling some water in the process. Again, not a problem accidents happen but that was the only time she smiled at us. Again the food was absolutely delicious, I also don't mind paying the added in gratuity, but I think 20% was a bit much for the service she hardly provided. I understand waitresses make their my money by tips, but you also have to earn that tip. Maybe waitressing isn't her calling but for the moment she's at her job it is and she should be providing top notch service for a meal as expensive and elegant as J Morgan's provides. I come from a family of restaurants, and we would have tipped her more if she had given more than the bare minimum service I would expect from McDonald's. With that being said, we would absolutely be back for another celebratory dinner, however We'll be requesting a different waitress. For a meal that costs 80$ a person I expected better service.

I ordered the Montreal ribeye and my friend ordered the regular ribeye. Both of then were very thin, probably around 1/2" thick. I asked for medium rare and my steak was so over cooked that the waiter said something before I even could. It was well done, without question. The waiter was decent and offered a new steak to me, which I denied because I knew it would have been another 20-30 min wait, and ended up getting us one free desert. I'm not high maintenence by any stretch, and never send food back, but for a place that advertises as a premier steakhouse and our steaks costing $39, I was very disappointed in J Morgans.

Best steak that I have had in a long time. Server was pleasant and attentive. Small establishment with no sound abatement. Noise was distracting. Reasonable price for top quality meal.

The food was great other than a big piece of gristle in my husbands wagu steak. The drinks were yummy and the server was very helpful knowledgeable and gave us great service. I was not happy about the 20% mandatory tip that was spilt with all the waiters and waitresses. I would rather just give a bigger tip of the service and food deserves it and that waiter or waitress gets it.

Appetizer was good but meal went downhill after that. Caesar salad had an overabundance of lettuce, some of it brown, and dressing was anemic. Turkey burger was bland and tasteless, couldn't find the onion jam, and cheese was minimal. Wagyu steak at $48 was nothing special and unevenly cooked. Service was acceptable but 2 places cleared then waited for server to finish clearing. This was a birthday celebration and server brought desserts EXCEPT FOR honoree whose order she neglected to put in. All in all, not worth it.

J Morgan's is always good, watch out for extra large portions, I always take home a second meal, good selection with many interesting specials, always good sauces and accompaniments,

Yet another wonderful experience and delicious meal at J Morgan's. The staff was delightful and the food was outstanding. We have dined here several times, and they never fail to impress.

A very nice family dinner at this good restaurant. We all have very good dishes. The jumbo shrimp were indeed jumbo and the garlic bread as good as always. I'd say the garlic bread base could be softer it was difficult to cut through. We had lobster Mac and Cheese - very good, lobster sandwich which was good and the fillet mignon which was very good. Also had a strawberry cake - delicious. Service was good Id say could be a bit faster especially with drinks and maybe check in to the table a little bit more. Other than that very pleasant and helpful.

Impromptu dinner out on a Thursday turned into a fantastic evening. The Porterhouse was cooked to perfection and the Lobster BLT is equally as good as the one's I've enjoyed on the coast of Maine. The service was exceptional (as always) and we're already looking forward to our next visit ❤️?

It was packed - service a tad slow but understandably so and everyone very nice and all on deck pitched in to help each other! Food is very good - portions large! It is sort of a Vermont institution!

Highly recommend J Morgan's ambiance, service, food was exceptional ..... save some of your appetite for dessert or at least order to take a piece of the strawberry cake home .... So delicious .... Hats off to all staff front and back of the house! Thank you

The entrees were fine, better than fine, well prepared as usual. Having dined here a number of times, I come to expect slow service (2 and a half hours or more from appetizers to dessert is not unusual), but service was relatively fast. Was pleasant enough, but did the minimum. No asking if we needed refills on drinks. No check in during the meal to ask if everything was to our satisfaction. My dining partner and I shared one of their signature Cobb Salads. While I would not consider their offerings reasonably priced for the most part, their salads are one of the exceptions. An enormous Cobb Salad for $14 is amazing, however, this time the toppings (hard boiled eggs, bacon, cheese, avocados and other veggies) seemed in low proportions to the mounds of lettuce. Half way through, I realized there were no avocados at all! Finally hailing our wait person, I asked if the prep person forgot to put them on. They said, oh no they didn't forget, we're just out. I kind of would have liked to have known that before ordering as the salad was unbalanced and less than satisfying. J. Morgans is a great place to go for special occasions, but I could not afford to go there with any frequency. There are few of the older Vermont family restaurants around any more (think the old Dog Team Tavern), so there is value in experiencing the ambiance.

Very nice dinning in our state capitol Montpelier !!! Also glad to see the back of the house gets recognized for their hard work by sharing tips w front of the house Team work is a positive effort Thank you

Empty restaurant. Waited 10 minutes to be seated past our reservation time. Edited another 35 minutes for someone to come to our table and it was only for water. Waited another 15 minutes for someone, other than a waitress, to come and take our order. An hour and 20 minutes after arriving at the restaurant we received our food.
