If you’re looking for a proper meal in Vergennes—something that doesn’t taste like regret on a plate—Black Sheep Bistro delivers. The steak? Perfectly cooked. The fish? Fresh and flavorful. The Kangaroo bites? Just kidding, they don't have those. All of the food is served quasi-fancy, halfway family-style, every bite confirms that, yes, someone in the kitchen actually gives a damn about reputation and takes pride in their work.

The ambiance leans into that romantic, sort of old-school charm common of the mid-market semi-fancy type places reminiscent of something you'd find in Saratoga Springs or Manhattan (the nicer parts of any still exist) —dim lighting, rustic decor, the kind of place where you half-expect to see Hemingway brooding over a glass of wine in the corner (if he wasn't 61 years dead). The service? Attentive and friendly, the kind that makes you feel like an actual guest rather than an inconvenience.

But let’s talk about the price. Black Sheep Bistro is excellent, but you’re paying for every ounce of that excellence, especially for the area. This isn’t a casual, “let’s grab dinner” kind of place—it’s a “do I really want to spend this much on one meal?” kind of place. The sticker shock is real compared to everywhere else around, and while the food justifies the cost, your wallet might still file a formal complaint.

Oh, and good luck parking. The experience starts with an exercise in false urban combat as you circle the block, hoping a space opens up before you resign yourself to a brief hike, hoping you don't get run-over in the light-up crosswalks by some absentminded driver from New Jersey. By the time you finally get inside, you’ve earned those garlic mashed potatoes.

So, if you don’t mind spending serious cash (for a meal at least) and engaging in a minor parking ordeal, Black Sheep Bistro is worth it. Just be prepared to pay more handsomely than the broader area average for the privilege.

Everything at the Black Sheep was perfect! Pumpkin curry soup was incredible and the bistro steak was perfectly accompanied by the creamed spinach and the family-style garlic mashed potatoes which are given to every table (love this concept). I hope to come back!

My husband and I dined at The Black Sheep Bistro one evening during our short vacation in Vergennes in late October. We made reservations to dine there, which was a good thing, because even with some outdoor seating, dining space is limited in this small restaurant. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and the bread that was served before the dinner was hot, crusty and delicious. For those who are counting calories or have a small appetite, beware that each table is served garlic mashed potatoes, and French fries (family style) along with their entrees. We even said ‘no’ ahead of time to the mashed potatoes, but our waitress brought them over anyway. Good food, but too many gratuitous extras!

My wife and were visiting VT for our honeymoon and arrived at the Blacksheep a full hour before they closed. They turned us away because they “were fully booked,” but I could plainly see there were many open tables inside and on their patio. We found the staff to be very pretentious and lazy.

The food is great, we sat outside on the patio. The traffic on 22 a was loud and heavy until about 730. They were quite busy it took a Long Time to get our meals. all in all a good time. The weather was very nice that evening.

Cute place. Well prepared steak and fish. Family style potatoes was cute... Don't have to choose between mashed and fries. Both were great.
