As a huge Middle-earth/Tolkien fan, I had read about this place for a while, and while in Arlington recently we decided to stop in for a lunch on a hot summer Saturday. Due to COVID-19 we definitely wanted an outdoor table, but unfortunately the shaded tables were already occupied, so we sat in the sun by ourselves away from the unmasked biker gang folks. Service was slow--only one server (or any employee, for that matter, outside the kitchen) for the entire place, and we arrived just as several large groups showed up. we waited 20 minutes for our food to show up, and while it wasn't our server's fault, they were clearly understaffed. The best part about our experience was the food: we each ordered burgers, and my backyard burger with organic beef was great, served with thick hand-cut house fries and a side of clearly house-made tartar with big chunks of onion. My wife' veggie burger was good as well--excellent taste for a veggie burger, and almost passable as for beef. Her's was served with a huge side of tots, enough for two hungry people easily. We started with a glass of Two Towns marionberry cider, which went down nice in the hot sun. We later quenched our thirst with some ice water, but we had to ask for it. So, OK server, great food, but the decor...situated in a former church, there is a lot of potential for an amazing space, but the interior does not live up to the name. There are some appropriate posters in the entrance paying homage to Middle-earth and Gandalf, but the rest of the interior is very generic-y new-age/gargoyle/faerie without a cohesive theme. In the back of the main room is a large stage setup for some live music, and I would think that this place is a great live music venue....if that is what it wants to be. But with a name like Mirkwood, I expect something different.
And AMAZING Food, And
