Every 5 star review is accurate. Period. After reading the negative reviews I can confidently say that anybody willing to write a negative statement about this establishment has simply lost the spice of life, a sad sight. The point isn’t to order what you want. You get the FULL BOAT and engaging conversation, full stop. This sandwich satisfied the appetites of thousands of people for 40 years. It’s a simple and well crafted sandwich that flies in the face of all the overpriced and over dressed sandwiches of today’s sub shops.

The news firehose is spraying directly at us. Sub Shop in Everett is my meditation to stay grounded. The menu is minimalistic and the no-frills sandwiches should make Subway file bankruptcy in shame. Uncle Eng is equal parts showman and sandwichi. He spun yarn of his journey using a basketball to float the rough seas to escape China, his adaptation in America and his upcoming celebration of 40 years on Broadway. Don't visit if you hate the American Dream.

Tucked away on a side street, this place is easy to overlook with all the fast food places in the area. There's no signage from the main street, or even on the sidewalk. The only way to tell it's there, the front facing sign of a submarine that's says sub shop.

I only stumbled upon it while walking a new route, but I'm sure glad I did!
The owner was a very nice gentleman who clearly had seen the changes of the times in that area and seemed extremely happy to share a piece of history with me. As I was reading the signs of his accomplishments, I saw they had been open 40 years now!

Before he even came out to greet me, I knew that a shop that hidden away with only 1 man running the show doesn't stay in business that long if he's bad at what he does.

Big point of note here, he is cash only. I had $13.50 on me which net me a turkey and ham sub with a can of coke.

Point of note, there's no prices I saw on most of the items. I honestly couldn't tell you what things cost here. When he asked how much I had, I told him the amount and he looked at it for a moment and then decided on what I was going to order for me based on that. 🤷‍♂️ Trust. Who am I to question a man who's run the game this long?

So I sit at the lonely square table that was kind of crooked as to compensate for the interior design and wait in anticipation to find out what I'm even getting. I'm used to at least having a size chart for my fluctuating hunger and poverty levels.

While making the sub we talk about his wall of masks from various cultures. Opposite of that, clocks. He joked that people always think he's an antique store seller which... Yep I could see that. But honestly it was cool, gave the place a very homelike quirky vibe that I really dug.

Finally the sub comes out and I see... Well... A sub. I worked at Quiznos for many years, I know a sandwich and from the outside, I can say it legally met all criteria of that which would define it as a sub.
This was all of the cash I had on me which meant I was now walking 3 miles to my house instead of taking the bus so it better be at LEAST on par with subway which... C'mon, not hard lol.

It didn't seem like much, until I bit into it. Holy hell, I don't know what combination of ingredients he used but clearly you don't stay in business 40 years without knowing at least a couple secrets to your craft.

It was extremely light, like the bread was SOFT soft. Chewing a cloud soft. Didn't fall apart in transit like you'd expect though. Everything he uses is fresh, never been frozen. Idk if he's got butcher connections or what but I'm not gonna question the claim, I was in sandwich bliss.

Originally he had recommended the house special, the #15 to me. He was really excited about that one but I was a bit short. Instead all I got was a basic turkey and ham and even that didn't disappoint. I'm looking forward to the next time I have a $20 on me to see where it goes from here!

Subman is the best! Amazingly friendly, go once and he'll know your sandwich forever.
Bring cash, he's a small business and doesn't want to charge extra for debit/credit fees.

Walked in and the owner immediately made me feel like family. Freshly sliced meets, good selection of soda/chips (and oddly enough wafer cookies?) means ill be back time and time again. This is my new go-to spot for a sandwich and good conversation.

Yes it is Cash Only. But if my keeping some cash on hand or stopping at an ATM means supporting a business and individual thats been around the area for over 4 decades? Minor inconvenience that i am more than willing to deal with.

Went to get a haircut next door and “the sub guy” came out to greet me, we chatted about my car and he introduced himself as the sub guy. He mentioned he has been in business for 40 years next year, so with the information I knew it had to be good. Stopped in after my haircut and couldn’t be happier with my decision. Fresh cut meat, fresh ingredients, friendly and clean environment. Cash only and there’s an atm just next door. Best whole in the wall in all of Everett. Cheaper than subway or jimmy johns. I got the #15 and was extremely delighted with his number one seller!

Asked for a hot sandwich even explained how I can’t find a good place ?hoping I wouldn’t have to look anymore. The bread was a white roll not homemade the meat was cold I don’t even think it was pastrami cheese was cold and it taste like miracle whip was on it . When I got home 10 min ride it was ice cold so tried to warm it in the air fryer it was a bad sandwich I threw it away .
