I headed to Greenwood for some gumbo at 74th Street Ale House. I have had this dish and have often cooked it many times. It is a complex but flavorful dish with many ingredients, but the key is the roux. Flour, olive oil and canola oil are sloooowly browned and thickened. When the roux is ready a pile of vegetables, meats, and spices are added to the pot with broth. The mixture then simmers on low heat for hours. When ready, the gumbo is served over rice. 74th Street is the master! This bowl was as delicious as ever. I also had some delicious, spiced nuts as an appetizer. The service was slow.

Excellent local pub. Had the salad, Reuben, and chili — all great with just the right spice, not for anyone looking for bland food. Sports on TV keep the vibe lively. I skip the beer, but the liquor selection covers all the basics.

I will preface this by stating I came towards the end of the evening after the Car Show so I get that folks might be tired but it wasn't busy when I came in. However that can't be an excuse for the service I received.
I sat outside and waited for waitstaff that never came. I went inside to get a menu and waited for that, too. Then I went outside to see what I wanted to eat and drink. Unfortunately, they must have lost me because I had to go back in and order food and drink at the bar rather than at my table. Fifteen or twenty minutes later the bartender came out and told me he FORGOT MY ORDER!
You'd think that would be enough but even after finishing eating I had to go in to seek out staff to pay my bill. Somewhat surprised they didn't ask me to bus my own dishes, too.
So, in other words, the service was painfully sub-par.
As to the food, it was fine but the gumbo was topped with a three pepper salsa that only served to make the dish super spicy as opposed to complementing the flavors. It was on the verge of not being edible and maybe it wasn't for someone who doesn't like spicy food. The salad was good but that is a salad. I've heard other things are tasty but I can't speak to those.
I may go back but the service left a bit to be desired so we will see...

The Reuben sandwich is fantastic. The way they grill the bread... it must be unhealthy because it tastes so good. Staff is friendly. They always seem to have Ruebens Porter on tap. I eat there all the time.
