I had what is literally the worst bar experience I have ever had in my life at the Blue Moon Tavern on New Year's Eve.

I, my wife, and her friend stopped by for New Year’s Drinks around 6, and about 6:30 or so, made the mistake of asking Tim Duvall, the clearly drunken before 7:00 PM owner of the establishment, whether outside food can be brought into the bar. This led to his regaling us with an extended and utterly unsolicited history of the bar.

He then invited himself to sit with us, halfway into the seat before slurring a “Can I sit down?” to insert himself into our booth. We then moved to another unsolicited conversation, this time about politics. Now, to be clear – I have no doubt that I and a sober Tim Duvall probably agree on most of our politics. This did not stop him from berating me as I agreed with his point, loudly escalating and yelling as I tried to agree with him (again… to be clear, I DIDN’T disagree his political view) until he began yelling that I was kicked out.

As I stood to talk on him, he became VERY comfortable with putting his hands on me, grabbing my sweatshirt to move me. I was NOT about to challenge that as a Black man new to Seattle that doesn't know how the police would handle things. I need to be very specific about how quickly this man felt comfortable touching me, grabbing my sweater to “drag” me. This is the step that is WAY over the line. I would genuinely like to recommend this place, as I'm looking for bars that offer sugar cane soda. Drunken ownership- in the early evening in New Year's - that feels comfortable being handsy with Black folk is far too much. AVOID at all costs.

Great (and historic) hangout spot. Drinks are reasonably priced. They don't serve food, but they do allow you to bring your own food in.

Atmosphere (this makes this bar!): One of the best open mic nights in Seattle! As a great live music venue, open since 1934, the Wednesday night open mic is a scene alone! Johnny and Odin hold it down, and from regulars to fledgling performers, you will not find the spirit and variety of Seattle's live music scene as alive as it is at The Blue Moon Tavern!!

Okay, I will level with you, if its weren't for the proximity of a good taco stand, Caravan (the sleeper restaurant in the central asian, great spots on the north and), Dick's, and the Ave, would be a 1 of 5. Dive bar, chips and pretzels, nothing special, but, they encourage outside food!!

Service is top tier dive bar! You will get taken care of, the bartender might not look so happy to oblige, but they will. And if you frequent a dive bar, And Tip Well, the staff will look after you because the, the staff, want patrons like you.

Exist Travels

We can change our rating when we come back.
Since we travel with a lot of international clients, they wanted to check out local pubs and live music in Seattle.

They brought their European driver’s licenses but they weren’t allowed inside without a passport.

So we will have to come back next time.

THE best dive bar in Seattle. Great live music and events, cheap but tasty drinks, and an incredible crowd of regulars ;) Long live the Blue Moon!

Awesome vibe here! Have come for the open mic nights on Wed. Jonny hosts a great one, and the stage setup is sick/great sound. Good times all around! The bartender(s) are super nice, too.

I came from out of town and wanted to see some live music. This place was an awesome venue. Volue was correct and the hat I bought was sweet. Idk where she went to bartending school but where I'm from you make sure the people seated at your bar are happy before you address your line. I had to get up off my barstool and walk over and get in line to get a beer. She did a good job otherwise but that should t happen. Kids... these days

Historic venue with a really cool vibe. They often host great bands and the sound is always good. They also serve Seattle Soda which is more interesting than the standard Coke products that you'd find at most bars. They don't sell tickets in advance so be prepared to pay at the door.
