Context: I am blind and have a guide dog that gets me around obstacles, points out doors and stairs, among other things that allow me to get around independently.

I went to CanteenM, and the lady at the front desk said they did not allow dogs in the bar. I explained that my dog was a service dog and that she couldn’t legally deny us entry. She then changed the story and said that they didn’t allow dogs in the bar, but that she would make an “exception” for us as long as the dog didn’t sit on my lap (we’re talking about a full grown lab with 2+ years of training, mind you). I said obviously the dog would not be on my lap. She’s too big for that. And she kept insisting that she was making an exception and that this was a disclosure she was “required” to make. As if she was doing me a favor and I should be grateful to be let into the bar, as if I was a second class citizen or something. Well, I’m sorry that I’m not grateful for your “exception” when you are breaking the law. Being treated like any other customer as a blind person is not an “exception”, it’s basic decency.

Being told that my dog couldn’t be on my lap was silly, but I can deal with that. It was being told that they were making an exception for me and the self-righteous attitude throughout the entire conversation that really brought things over the edge.

By law, a business is allowed to ask only *2* questions:
1. If the service dog is required because of a disability and
2. What tasks the dog is trained to perform.

Anything else is discrimination. Being told that me coming into the bar was making an “exception” was honestly humiliating, apart from the fact that it’s illegal. I would think people in Seattle would know better. Never again.

In the end, we decided to leave since I clearly wasn’t welcome. We went a few blocks to Local Public eatery, were seated like any other customer, stayed there for 2 hours with my dog on the *floor* sleeping peacefully to the point where no one noticed her if they weren’t nearby, and had a wonderful time. So glad some businesses still treat all their customers with dignity.

I don’t expect this review to change anything, but maybe at least a few people will think twice before coming here.
