We were just overcharged at this restaurant about 2 hours ago. I have the menu right here in front of me. The Merchants Cheeseburger is 15 dollars and for fries, add 2 dollars. So now it’s 17 bucks, which was no problem. We ordered 2 of them. When the bill came, we were charged 22 dollars per burger. The bartender stood by the price and because we’re tourists, we just sucked it up and paid and left. This is a warning to all…. Don’t let them gig you like they did us.

In my short time in Seattle, I have been exploring the city. I made my way down to Pioneer Square to check-out another old-time Washington restaurant/bar/saloon. For lunch, I stopped in the Merchant’s Café and Saloon, established in 1890. I started with a shot of whiskey. I rarely drink whiskey but thought it appropriate in an old saloon. I asked the cook “what would you eat on your break?” He said, “chicken wings” and listed the sauces. He offered to combine the BBQ and Honey sauces which I gladly accepted. The wings were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The sauce was fantastic. The service was awesome as was the beautiful old Seattle saloon.

Great downtown location. Historic building.
The fryer was not operational so they had a very limited menu.
However, if you ordered a burger for $18, you paid full price without the fries/side since they couldn't fry food.
Burger was tasty, but very small. Not worth $18 for the burger alone.

Oldest bar in Seattle. Plenty of seating. It's an unassuming bar. Extra loud games on television. Uninterested bar tenders have trouble making menu shots. Is it a sports bar?

Austin & Chris where incredibly welcoming from the moment I walked in. Austin helped me choose a drink, when I was unsure of what to order, I really loved it! Chris served up some bomb French fries with his own personal spin on the seasoning that made em real yummy. I had fun just chatting with them and they made my day that was not going so great beforehand 10x better. The atmosphere of the bar itself would've been enough, I could've sat alone and enjoyed my drinks taking it all in-- but the staff really made my experience what it was. Not to mention they have a beautiful piece of preserved Underground Seattle that is a goth girls paradise downstairs from the bar.
Thanks for a great night of good service, company, and food/drinks. I'll be back and tell my friends.

What a great place!! Austin was our bartender and we loved the place because of him. Great vibes, wonderful atmosphere. Would definitely go back, the chicken wings were amazing and were hope Austin is working when we do go back.

Whoever that curly headed forever frat boy behind the bar on Tuesdays needs to learn to check for state seals before bending someone’s ID.

Went on the underground tour and was told we’d get 10% off if we showed our stamp. Bartender was rude about it, and then fully bent my Real ID from Tennessee in half 3 hours before my flight because it “felt flimsy”. I made him give it back before he could do anything further to damage my property and showed him the hologram. I am a grown woman who definitely is not passing for under 21 (and wasn’t trying to?) it was incredibly unnecessary and my friends ending up closing and leaving because of his attitude.

Stumbled upon this on my way back to the hotel and did not disappoint. Bartender was cool and told this is the oldest bar in Seattle. Check out the downstairs.
