A beloved spot for Seattleites, and rightly so. I walked here from the Ballard locks, but driving is probably easier for most visitors. I would not call this a hidden gem by any means, but it is far enough away from the chaos of downtown Seattle and other densely populated areas in the city that it does not feel as crowded as one might expect for such a scenic area, so idyllic and lovely, in a large city. The dark sand of the beach is striking and almost poignant, and from the rippling shore an observer can see the expanse of Puget Sound, will the Olympic mountains in the background looking staggering in their rough indigo majesty on a clear day. Logs of winding asymmetric driftwood are sprawled across the beach, giving it a certain primordial and untamed feeling. Being here, I am reminded of my travels in Norway: despite its high status as a sightseeing area, providing one of the best views of Puget Sound, there nonetheless remains something wild about it.

Golden Gardens: Where Seattle Pretends It’s California in the summer…but is my quiet getaway Winter-Spring!

Golden Gardens is where Ballard bros, off-leash golden retrievers, and existentially weary Seattleites converge to watch the sun sink into the Sound like it’s got somewhere better to be. The parking lot is a gladiator arena—only the strong (or Prius-driving passive-aggressives) survive. Bonfire pits? Full by 2 p.m., claimed by a single rogue camping chair. The sand is that perfect mix of scenic and mildly concerning, thanks to the occasional forgotten sock.

But damn, the view. When the Olympics glow pink and the waves catch fire in the sunset, even the loudest Bluetooth speaker can’t ruin the moment. It’s chaotic, it’s weird, and it’s peak Seattle. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Playground: Always has kids here!

Toilets: Unlocked and clean in the winter; very well used in the summer.

Dog-friendliness: It’s Ballard…dogs rule here.

Picnic area: Covered and uncovered, Charcoal Grills, Tables, can reserve

Awesome beach/park! Extremely glad that I found this place. Really great place for the beach, if it was a warmer day. Great place to walk on the trails around the park. Plenty of sandy beach, grass areas, playground, walking trails, bathrooms, boat launch and a marina nearby.
