I attended a tasting dinner at Surrell in Seattle on Saturday, May 23, to celebrate a special occasion, filled with anticipation and high hopes for an unforgettable evening. Let's start with the highlights: the food was nothing short of spectacular - creative, delicious, and generously portioned. Opting for the wine pairing was a decision well made, as each selection beautifully complemented our dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience. Additionally, the restaurant's decor left a lasting impression on us, stunning in its presentation, promising enchanting summer evenings on the back patio. However, it's with a heavy heart that I note the main detractor of our evening was not related to the culinary arts but rather to service and operational efficiency. Despite the restaurant's policy of a single seating at 6:30 PM, which we diligently aimed to honor by arriving at 6:25 PM, we were greeted by an unwelcome queue outside. While the warm greeting and hot wine were appreciated, they hardly compensated for the discomfort of waiting in the rain and cold for 15-20 minutes. Our disappointment was compounded by the seating arrangement. Despite requesting seats at the chef's counter upon reservation—a request the restaurant does not guarantee—the lack of transparency and explanation regarding their seating policy was disheartening. Instead, we were escorted to a regular table without any form of communication.Service, unfortunately, continued to detract from our experience. Our waiter's demeanor was aloof and unwelcoming, significantly lacking the attentiveness and warmth we anticipated. The absence of an introductory explanation regarding the meal—its duration, course count, or what to expect—left us in confusion. This lack of communication led us to prematurely delve into our appetizers, only to receive belated explanations. The oversight extended to our dietary preferences, which were selected but not confirmed upon our arrival, leading to multiple instances of incorrect dish placements, notably affecting one of us who abstains from fish and seafood.Lastly, a necessary early departure was met with rudeness from our waiter, an attitude unbefitting of such an establishment, further marring our experience. In conclusion, while the culinary prowess of Surrell is undeniable and truly a gem Seattle should pride itself on, the overall package was regrettably overshadowed by the level of service and operational mishaps. It's a bittersweet feeling, acknowledging that the excellence of the food couldn't fully compensate for the evening's shortcomings. Surrell possesses the potential to be a pinnacle of Seattle's food scene, yet without addressing these critical areas, the complete experience remains elusive.

Been in Seattle for 8 years now, and can’t believe we hadn’t been here before. Hands down the best meal (really an experience) in the city. The food was creative, whimsical, incredibly well balanced. Wine pairings were impeccable and gave us a new appreciation for Washington vintners. The staff were so warm and knowledgeable. We sat at the chef’s table and got to watch the artistry happening in the kitchen. No on site parking, so would recommend taking a rideshare. Probably best after the wine anyway. Well worth it!!

They have the best dessert I've savored across the USA, this spot exudes culinary brilliance. The chef and crew radiate warmth, making every guest feel right at home. While the vibe leans a bit formal, it sets the stage perfectly for special occasions or classic romantic dates. The seats? Oh-so-comfy. They give you tiny flower bouquets. A sweet touch, courtesy of the chef's mom. Upon arrival, you're greeted with tiny portraits with your party name, flowers, and a delightful amuse-bouche, plus some seriously tasty sourdough – some of the best in Washington!Every dish is a masterpiece, carefully crafted with a burst of flavors and textures that'll make your taste buds dance. Got a little bit sad because they don't offer cocktails, just wine and champagne. But let's talk dessert – hands down the best in the USA. Everything was just lovely and delicious. Perfect for a date night. Downside, was only that if your table is located near the big window room, the person facing the window have to deal with car beams flashing from the street through the windows, they should put a curtain or semi transparent barrer. Overall? It is worth it for an unforgettable traditional, formal dining experience. Comparing Seattle prices, this place charges an honest amount of money for the high quality they are serving. I'm amazed how the gastronomic critics and Seattle food guides barely mention this place.

Easily the best meal I've had in Seattle in years. Excellent all around, the service was superb, with no detail left out.

Truely a special evening to remember. It is a culinary experience from before you walk in the door through walking out the door to go home. No detail was missed. The food was delicious, inventive and unique in a good way. Don't just go for a special event, it is worth going to check out what each season brings.

Great food and wine pairings. It's a nice Michelin-esk experienceWe loved that they featured mostly female owned Washington wines, particularly the Red Mountain sub-AVA selection. Happily surprised by the cotton candy ganache bites & the seared scallops. The huckleberry olive oil dessert was a reachTry to sit at the counter so you can watch the food prep. The chef comes around here and there to explain the foodThey have a riddle type menu at your seats which was hard to follow as the courses came out we had no clue where we were on the tasting riddle sheetWe were there from 6:20-9:15Parking: Plenty of street parking & there's a few paid parking spots in a nearby apartment building

We enjoyed a winemakers dinner with three wineries who all source grapes from Boushey Vineyards in Washington. Creative and Quirky tasting menu and so many lovely wines!

The service was wonderful, including the little details (coffee at the end of the meal, small amuse bouche at the beginning with a bouquet of flowers). The ambiance was unique and the restaurant was situated in an old house. However for the price that we paid, we expected a little more from the food - we thought the dishes weren't that unique. The bay leaf braised octopus was dull and the beef cheek was one-note. The baby carrots appetizer didn't appeal to us either. Perhaps the menu was a one-off given the stellar reviews and different menu options from the pictures on other days. Our favorites of the night were the miso molasses cake and the delectable sourdough (probably the best I've ever had).

Very few restaurants in seattle have a flair for amalgamating storytelling, service and food as well as Surrell does.We opted for the fall dining menu with zero proof cocktails. Some of the dishes would be the best we’ve had - The weather vane scallops, the octopus and the porcini sayabon were amazing! The zero proof drinks were complex and wonderful! The service was impeccable- the dishes were served with a flair, the chef introduced the source of the produce with most meals. Each guest had a handmade small bouquet of flowers (made by the chef’s mother) that you were encouraged to take home!As we left on a freezing night, we were offered a complimentary coffee or tea to go to keep us warm just outside the door! The meal had warmth and so did the ambience and service- Definitely one of the best places for a fine dining experience in seattle.

Surrell is a wonderful experience for the high quality details, excellent staff that cares about your time there, and the essence of food. Make reservations ahead of time, select the chefs table if possible! It was cool to see the working kitchen team. You're greeted with a refreshing drink at check in. With a rotating "tasting menu", each season will be a different menu put together by the chef and team. Each dish was a surprise and fun. At my visit, for one of the plates, each ingredient was packaged separately and we were tasked to put together mini tacos. While the quality of plates was excellent, I felt like during the middle the dishes sort of felt redundant. The flavors are consistent across all dishes. I recommend Surrell to anyone looking for a fine dining experience. The staff care about your time there and the chef puts his heart into his craft. I look forward to visiting again in the spring time for the next tasting menu.
