Wonderful treats and bread run by generous caring folk.

I go here a lot with my dog, who gets a little bite of old soft bread with a visit.

But the baked goods for humans: oh my! I feel like this place encapsulates “really good bread before making bread became cool.” A wide variety of different daily loaves with each one being a hit, at a shockingly low price. And the sweet treats: yeah, this isn’t a patisserie, you’re not getting a flaky croissant here. You’re getting a really excellent cookie or scone, also at an excellent price. Crusty or squishy, airy or chewy, crumbly or lip-smacking—however the sourdough or brioche or honey oat or whatever you’re ordering, it’ll be what it’s supposed to be, which is delicious.

This place is legit. I’ve had some fantastic bread in Seattle but this place is by far the best. Fresh, crusty on the outside, spongy on the inside. Baked goods are stellar too. It’s our weekly go-to and we haven’t had a miss yet. And the prices are really good - $7 for a loaf (as of June 2025) compared to $10-$12 in some other places and at the farmers market.

This place knows bread. I’d come back.

I freaking LOVE Tall Grass Bakery. The cinnamon roll are amazing, and I look forward to them all week. There is a nice rotation of speciality breads like olive and onion and cherry rye each day. Writing this review is making me hungry.

A popular local bakery with a wide selection of vegan breads. We tried one of the sourdoughs and it was great.

The last two loaves of rye bread I purchased were as hard as a brick. I could hardly cut them when I got home. They used to be baked correctly, but not anymore.

They clearly label everything that is vegan, and their breads are delicious. My favorite bakery for breads in Seattle. Would bump to 5 stars for more vegan sweets but I appreciate that they’ve got an option or two, and it’s always delicious.

The greatest benefit to living in the city proper is access to small neighborhood businesses like this one. My best Seattle mornings begin with a hot corn muffin from Tall Grass Bakery, followed shortly thereafter by breakfast with toast made from fresh compagnon.

It's never a bother to wait in line as it's always a pleasure to see familiar faces (human and dog) from the neighborhood. We are often greeted with a familiar welcome from the staff; other Ballard businesses should take note: excellent customer service means you can rely on steady business from repeat customers from conscientious folks like us who prefer to spend what we earn in our neighborhood when we can. Tall Grass Bakery is a neighborhood treasure. Please be encouraged to patronize them.

Before you go: dress for the weather as the line often spills from the small counter space and onto the sidewalk. Also, I must give a shout-out to the artisan who always greets my wife and I with a serenade and a good laugh - why can't all of Seattle be like this?!

It's always a gamble what's in store... But the baguettes are good and the rye sourdough is very good.
The lines are ridiculous and service speed is fantastically slow. The workers are nice though.

I always see lines outside this place and today was my first chance actually check it out. They had a full rack of different baked bread, the variety was impressive. I went with a standard sourdough and they have a slicing machine to make life easy.
I also decided to try the pecan roll because I love nuts on bread. And has to try the cinnamon because many have said it's one of the best they've had. Also picked up a chocolate brioche and pad danish for good measure.

I really enjoyed the tartness of the sourdough and it's made for a really great grilled cheese sandwich. Found the cinnamon roll a bit too doughy for my tastes. You can get the cinnamon roll with or without raisins. I opted for with the raisins and glad I did.

Love that it's a true bakery and you can see the back operations and know that what you're eating baked goods was just earlier in the day. I dropped in at 10:40 AM.

Can't wait to try their walnut pain au levain -- one of my favorite loaves.

As a German, this bread is as close to what I get in local german bakeries. However, the reason I keep coming back to this place are not the breads but the Pretzel rolls. I wish there was a set time by when they are scheduled because they taste best when they’re hot out of the oven, and some days it’s at 11 and others at 11.40. But whatever, there are too many goodies to leave empty handed even if the hot Pretzel buns aren’t ready yet. Recommend this place as one of my favorite bakeries in Seattle!

Wheelchair accessibility: There is a small ramp to get into the store and there is enough space for the wheelchair to turn around, but only if no other customers are present.
