Don't judge the book by its cover -- this place seems run down on the outside, but once you're inside it's the real deal. GREAT coffee. The baristas know what they are doing. If you're more of a tea person, their tea lattes are wonderful -- I had a chai latte and I'm so used to disappointing ones from most cafes. But this one was perfect, and actually "spiced" to perfection. One of the best I have had in town. It's a very small space inside as well, but cozy. It can get crowded when busy, but its worth it even to just get your coffee to go and head somehwere else if you need to spread out. My new favorite cafe in the U district!

Lovely cozy cafe, staff are super friendly and fast. Coffee was delicious and well priced. There is very limited seating so don’t go expecting to sit, and make sure you are paying attention to what’s being put out because they sometimes don’t call orders loudly.
9/10 - Absolutely gem of a find (right outside of U district station), great place to stop by for a coffee.
Parking: Right next to u district station
Wheelchair accessibility: Small door with steps and not that much space inside so not really accessible.
Yo staff here is super nice and i had to put the cold brew in a syringe and drop it on a lil test kit to make sure there wasn’t any narcotics in there. WIRED. Food always smells great but I always just get my narc, i mean cold brew. Shout to the staff though, definitely a great addition to the first few interactions of my day.

I went here and ordered a matcha latte and a salmon bagel sandwich. The food and drink were good, but the service wasn’t great. They aren’t very friendly, and they forgot about my sandwich and when I asked, they said that they lost it and someone might have taken it. I was standing by the counter the entire time and would have seen it if someone else took it - it was never put on the counter. They also called it a “remake,” which was not the case. In the past, when a restaurant has lost my order, I’ve gotten something as an apology. While I don’t expect that, it certainly would have been nice. It’s also usually pretty crowded in there, which is not their fault, but it would be nice for there to be more space to stand while you’re waiting. I always find myself having to push past people or move out of the way.

I absolutely love Ugly Mug! I've been stopping by ever since I started at UW, and every visit has been wonderful. The baristas are incredibly kind and sweet, consistently going above and beyond for their customers. Whether it's offering to remake a drink (even when it wasn't their fault) or warmly greeting customers as they walk in, their politeness and energy never go unnoticed. I highly recommend this café to everyone, but especially UW students or anyone coming off the light rail—it's just about 100 feet from U-District station.

Really polite staff and great in house syrup made butterscotch latte! The egg croissant is a great quick grab for breakfast here.
After a unhappy morning I wanted something to give me more pep to my step.
Im not gonna lie, on the outside it looked shut down and wasn't sure if they were open but that's not where the good stuff is at.
You go through those doors and it's charming, the people that work here are SO FRIENDLY it took away my gloomy mood immediately after talking with them! The marshmallow cold brew was to die for as well, I chugged that sucker so fast I didn't even get a picture of it.
In short, the vibe and people are phenomenal and the coffee is amazing, what more can you ask for?

With some time to kill in the U District, a friend and I are in search of coffee. I see the 4.6 rating of Ugly Mug Cafe, hundreds of reviews, and say this has gotta be the place. And let me tell you, when approaching the outside of the building, my heart sank a bit. It’s just as bland as the name implies. But the inside is another story—it’s homey, comforting, bright. I got the blackberry something latte on the special menu and it was unlike anything I’ve had before. My friend got a breakfast sandwich which was large enough to be worth the price, a rare sight in this city. Overall, I absolutely recommend. It lives up to its good reviews.
2024 update: Still love this cafe. When looking for coffee in the U-District, this is my go-to.

Good breakfast and nice matcha latte. I appreciate that everything is compostable for takeout. This is pretty close to campus so expect it to be packed most mornings, but on nicer days the street outside has lots of tables and benches with shade. Prices are reasonable for the area.
Parking: You can't drive or park on the street directly outside, it's a bus-only road. There are some spots to park nearby but they're usually full. It's directly in front of U-Dist station though so the train is a good option.
