I was a regular at Shima for a few years (still am to this day) but was also an employee for about 3 years + and I can confidently tell you this is a one in a million business. The owners are there every single day, making incredibly delicious kitchen food and sushi, and know nearly every customer by name and know exactly what they order. They are personable, kind and caring not only to their customers/regulars, but to their staff as well. They make everything by hand, and cut no corners to ensure the quality and experience. I could not recommend Shima enough.

Everything we ordered was beautifully presented, fresh and flavorful. This is a must place for non run-of-the-mill sushi! EDIT***went here 3 yrs later....WTH happened? The place is dirty, the Toro not fresh, the table sticky.....shit! Another one bites the dust. Don't go here. The waitress was nice & attentive.

What a delightful experience we've had every time we've been here. The food is exceptionally good. The service is always friendly. And I've never had to wait for a table. Make sure to get the sashimi. The cuts are HUGE and well worth the $.

Excellent food, great service, nice atmosphere. We are fortunate to have a top quality restaurant like this in Stanwood.

As a followup to my original review, we recently re-visited Shima after the pandemic subsided and were not as pleased as we had been previously. Shima no longer offers lunch specials, which is disappointing, so we went at the beginning of dinner. While the food was still very good, there was a noticeable change in the atmosphere of the restaurant. One of the nice features of the original environment was the nice, more mellow music and the calm atmosphere. Upon our last visit the music was "top 40", nondescript and loud enough in an empty restaurant to have to shout to carry on a conversation at your table. The vibe behind the county was also loud and rowdy. This is all fine if one is looking for a party/bar atmosphere, but not conducive to a calm, relaxed meal.

There are plenty of restaurants where a meal can be had in a loud environment with TV screens in every corner, if that's what is desired, but I find it sad to lose one of the few places where a more relaxed, less intense atmosphere is wanted.

We always order tons of their toro nigiri, it’s super fresh and delicious. We first had toro in Japan and we were so amazed at the fatty fish, when we came back home to Stanwood we thought we would never get to eat toro as good as Japan but we tried Shima’s. The toro that Dan served us was 100% was better than sushi places in San Francisco, Seattle, and specifically Japan. The service was so amazing, and the staff was very friendly. We will be sure to bring all of our family and friends here to support a local family business!
