The food sushi at this place is legit amazing. It's the real deal, and if you're in Tacoma, want great sushi, you should totally go.
But here's what happened to me. I just wanted a light dinner, a one single roll (the Geshi roll—so good), a salad, and some miso. Communication with waitstaff isn't always solid so I pointed to the roll I wantedT. he waitress said the name of a different, way more expensive roll which I said no too and reiterated just the the one Geshi roll.
When the food came, she brought out my Geshi roll... (again, really good) and the roll I didn't order. I tried to talk to her about this but she just pointed at her notepad showing that she wrote down two rolls so that what my order was. Like I said, communication ont the best, it was super awkward and I didn't have time to argue.
So I ended up paying double what I wanted for dinner because of this. I was too full so I left it left it untouched. It was too hot a day to have raw fish sitting in my car for hours.
It's a bummer because the food itself is a solid 10/10. But the experience was such gut punch and awkward that I won't be going back, which sucks. It's great food, just triple-check your order before she walks away.

Took my family of four here on a Friday night and had a fantastic experience. The fish is incredibly fresh and high quality, and you could visualize the chef’s precision in every dish. There were only two people on staff, but server was kind and attentive, making us feel right at home. It’s an unassuming spot with an old-school sushi bar feel definitely not trying to modernize, just amazing sushi done right. We’ll definitely be back.

The food is so amazing, the sweet and salty go together perfectly, and the savory elements bring so much to it. The unagi sauce on the eel is top notch. And the tempura is so fluffy while also having a great crispness. All around the atmosphere, the food ,and the service, is so amazing

Excellent sushi... Tsunami roll might be my all time favorite roll. Don't be fooled by the modest exterior.

I really love the experience of eating here. The owners are friendly. I feel like the chef takes great care when preparing my food. I have always been served tender, flavorful fish here. My favorite is the shiso hamachi roll.

Unassuming place with really fresh sushi. Don’t expect a fancy ambiance, but if you just want good quality fresh sushi this is the place to go. On par with some of the best places in Seattle in terms of quality of ingredients.
This is the place to go if you prefer nigiri and sashimi when you order.
The rolls are good too but nothing extraordinary.

I’ve driven by this place countless times and I never stopped in because the outside is a little depressing looking but I decided to stop in for dinner today and I was pleasantly surprised at how great the meal was. Everything was very fresh and tasty and it has a cute family run vibe inside. I bet if they fixed up the look from the outside more people would stop in. I will defiantly be back.

If you like sushi, you need to try Gari Sushi. Don’t let the modest exterior fool you. I was also suspicious the first time I came here. It is some of the best sushi and Japanese comfort food around.
The Tsunami Salmon is an absolute must-try. I have had it more than 20 times. The flavors are fresh and delicious. Their udon is perfectly rich and comforting, and the seaweed salad is one of the best. Every dish is made with so much care, and you can taste the difference.
What really makes Gari Sushi special, though, is the people. The owner and his sister run the place almost entirely on their own, and their dedication is unmatched. They treat every customer like family, making each visit feel personal and welcoming.
This place deserves way more attention. If you’re in the area, don’t hesitate—Gari Sushi is a hidden gem that’s worth discovering. Once you try it, you’ll keep coming back. That's certainly what happened to me.
