For several years I have wanted to visit the Savage Grace vineyard/ winery along the Columbia River, and finally succeeded; we three visited in July 2025. The wines were the star of our experience.

WINE: 5.0. The certified wine expert among us could take only 2 bottles back with her to Japan from the 11 WA and OR wineries we visited during our road trip: one of her choices was a Savage Grace Cabernet Franc.

SERVICE: 4.5. Michael Savage was the sole server, and thus we were able to talk directly with the winemaker. We appreciated his unpolished explanations about the style of wines he strives for, and about his vineyards and winery. He also pointed us to a great viewpoint a few minutes away.

AMBIANCE: 4.5. We sat outside next to some production equipment; somewhat rustic, and with a nice view of the Columbia Gorge.

My partner and I stopped through Underwood for the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our visit at Savage Grace wines. The owner and talented winemaker, Michael, talked us through his nuanced wine making process, and his passion for creating unique wines shone through the Gewürztraminer and the Pet Nat - our favorites. We’re already looking forward to the chance to visit again!

Michael made time for our group on a Friday and was very welcoming! His wine was great, he told us all about the wine making process and even took us down into the vineyards! We would return here and recommend!

Such a great experience. It’s rare to love everything you taste. We so enjoyed the story of each wine & the deep knowledge shared about the journey from soil to wine. True great wine experience.

The most unwelcoming wine experience

I have tasted at the winery and have had the pleasure of drinking Michael's wines over the years, and they are fabulous! Make a reservation and schedule a tasting, and if you see his wine on a list, order it, you're welcome.

Beautiful location and wonderful wine. Michael took us through our tasting with a lot of thought and creativity. We had such a great time learning the differences between each one we tried. So friendly and certainly passionate about what they do.

Awesome experience! Some of the best wines in an area of Southern Washington that is getting a lot of notice recently. Add in heavenly views of the Columbia River and Mt. Hood and it made for a wonderful afternoon! We weren't rushed and were able to slow down and enjoy the moment. The wines were elegant and nuanced. The Riesling I had was easily one of the best American Rieslings I've ever had. Michael, the winemaker, was friendly and loved talking about the wines. My wife has worked in the wine industry for over 10 years and we have made our own wine, and if we were ever to start our own winery, this is the way we would do things. We have visited hundreds (literally) of wineries in our years throughout every region of Californa, Oregon and Washington and Burgundy in France, and Savage Grace is high on our list of favorites.Other wines of theirs that we loved were the Cot, the Field Blend (very interesting), the Grüner Veltliner and the Pinot Noir.Definitely go for a visit if you get the chance.

Had a great experience with Michael at the Underwood winery and highly recommend the Exploratory Tasting! Our visit was very educational and Michael went above and beyond with regards to catering to our individual preferences. We were able to sample several unique wines and this was our favorite tasting during our weekend trip. Hope to return again in the future!

Also went in blind…wanted to try wine in the area. Showed up at 3pm. Summer has no requirements for reservations . No sign from the road to find it…stuck behind weeds we’re a few signsOwner/operator was apparently not interested in doing a tasting. Had a similar interaction as the previous review. No one was there, he said his tasting is very intense, and would take a very long time. Up to an hour and a half. He is creating a “wine movement” apparently he needs to focus on that and have someone else do his tasting room. Avoid wasting your time.

Love all the knowledge Michael shares & the interesting things he is doing in winemaking!

Admittedly went in blind on a Sunday at 3:00-3:15 knowing they close at 5. No reservation. This is before they added “by appointment” to their name. Place was pretty empty at the time (four other patrons at two of the six-ish outdoor tables). Our party of 2 was told we have to buy 2 bottles of wine per person in order to do a tasting. We agreed. He/Server/maybe owner warned us that would be about $100 per person. We agreed. Though looking at the site now, that looks high. We agreed. He then warned us the wine wasn't like other wineries in the area. We agreed. Then warned us it was a really long process. Really sold the vibe he wanted to go home and/or not deal with us. So we decided against the tasting at that point. Was a pretty weird interaction.

Always my favorite! The owners are amazing and that is what their wine is also! So fortunate to be a wine member here. The tasting events are always well thought out and outstanding. If in the gorge be sure to visit.

UPDATE: Still amazing wine. Still amazing scenery. No roundup poison, just amazing wine with no filler or "cheats" to make it taste like xyz. Michael, the winemaker, is a master of the craft.ORIGINAL: Wonderful wines and you cannot beat having the winemaker and owner Michael as your pourer. Beautiful hilltop view of the Columbia River and a wonderful vibe. Savage Grace has definitely made it onto our must stop tasting rooms. Of the six wines being tasted the day we were here, we purchased four (and duplicates of some of those) and it was not because all six were not wonderful but decisions has to be made haha. Definitely a worthwhile stop
