Luis makes shopping here an ordeal. Because I am short and have a vertical ID, every single time I buy liquor and go through self checkout, he takes it upon himself to give me the hardest time possible. Literally every single time I have gone through self checkout with alcohol, he loudly tells everyone in the vicinity that I am a minor with a fake ID attempting to buy alcohol. Cue all the stares and disgusted looks from people. Then when he scans my ID, he will loudly announce that since it scans, he guesses he will have to sell this bottle to a minor with a good fake. Cue sympathetic looks for him, and outraged looks at me. I have social anxiety, and Luis doing this to me is EXTREMELY rude and unnecessary. He has literally given me panic attacks. I’ve attempted to stand up for myself, only to be laughed at and pointed out to others watching as a “disrespectful troublemaker”. I now have a reputation with the employees of this store that if Luis is working, I refuse to go through self checkout. This is not me overreacting. This is me having to be the bigger person as a 22 year old, because this old man refuses to see any error in his ways even when confronted. I even told him it’s humiliating and he has no right to slander me every time I come through self checkout, and he laughed! He thinks he’s funny, but he isn’t, he’s a jerk. And today, when he saw me walk past his self checkout in favor of a check stand……he made direct eye contact with me, and made sure I saw him laughing at me. Because he knows he has been such a jerk to me, I avoid him, and he thinks that’s funny. As a fellow customer service worker, I cannot imagine treating someone the way Luis treats me and getting away with it, let alone doing it multiple times. Reading other people’s bad experiences with Luis encouraged me to speak out and write this review. Store management needs to act on this feedback! Ask your CCK and grocery workers about the girl who won’t deal with Luis! And Luis, if you are reading this: SHAME ON YOU!
Excellent customer service
I hate having the misfortune of needing the stop in at this Safeway. Everyone seems rude or put upon to help you. They don't have baskets so you have to use a cart or carry everything in your hands. The outside says no initiative petitioning yet I've seen people out there gathering signatures for right-wing causes. This Safeway is frequently out of stock and cartons and boxes of merchandise are frequently dented or damaged. If you try to buy baby formula they treat you like a criminal and escort you to the front. Overall miserable experience, and while I generally dislike having to go to Safeway in general this location is particularly bad. I'd rather go to the Proctor, Pearl, or Hilltop Safeways but as I mentioned sometimes convenience forces me to suffer here.
This is for the store itself. Recently came into the store to make a purchase and noticed 2 of the employees watching me very intently. When I was ringing up my items I overheard them make comments towards me and continue to watch me very closely. Felt racially profiled. I sure hope the store manager sees this and does something about this. We live in 2024, where the world respects Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and this store does not meet this. I had to go back in to purchase another item and the lady saw me and said, "Oh he's back." Disgusting experience.
Every time I go to the Deli at this location it’s like no one wants to do their job. I’ve been on 3 separate occasions where someone has told me they don’t know how to make a sandwich at the sandwich station. Additionally, once I had bones in my chicken wrap. Pretty much done with going to this deli. Thank god Trader Joe’s is next door
Luis, who I’ve had frequent interactions with at self checkout has treated me poorly nearly every time I’ve visited this store. There have been multiple times where he’s stood directly behind me while I’m checking out, ignoring the other guests, and he’s just stared at me until I’m done. It feels as if he thinks that I’m not going to pay. It’s extremely insulting.
He has also nearly shoved me out of the way as he pointed to things on my screen when I’m in the middle of paying. He has an accent so it’s hard to understand him at times but he always seems upset. He’s been extremely rude, unprovoked, multiple times. It seems like the staff here don’t care about their customers. I’ve grown up in University Place and I’ve been going to this Safeway for nearly 20 years. I now go to the Safeway on Proctor. The staff are much nicer and the store is cleaner too so it’s worth the drive.
Smaller store but cleaner compared to the other ghetto Safeways at 56th and 72nd. So many entitled customers though. Seen many Kens and Karens here. Too many tweakers now too! They let regular pets in here. I have seen cats and dogs. The dogs bark at people. Some of them take a poo INSIDE the store! It’s disgusting! Safeway shouldn’t let animals in there, unless they are real service animals with papers.
This nice gentleman working in the bakery by himself this afternoon was really helpful. I appreciate it. Thank you so much!
This makes me so sad because I visit this location often if not daily and 7 out of 10 their hot food is amazing but I can’t this situation pass. I got the chicken from Monday chicken deal and when I first taste it, it tasted kind of chemically. Went home and had my husband try and he agreed it tasted like plastic. Maybe they dropped some plastic in the fryer by accident but throw it away, don’t sell it WTH!
Small store but well stocked. Helpful staff.

I like the Safeway .because close my house.
Noah the Butcher was top notch. I had some pretty specific needy requests and he looked busy restocking the seafood, but no matter, he was chipper and helpful. Immediately accommodating and knowledgeable. Was eager to help me and it was not a problem. Very grateful and happy with my purchase.
U.P. Safeway bakery made the most beautifully decorated bridal shower cake for a recent event...exceptional centerpiece! With the whipped topping and raspberry filling, everyone said it was the best cake they had ever eaten!
Good prices when using app. Always use app.
I will not shop here again. Why is there ever a time that there are no checkout isles open. I had a full cart, half was produce. "Self checkout" was open but with a huge line. A little chaotic actually.
There were 2 teenagers standing around not knowing which way was up, that looked like they worked there.
After the 3rd item that would not scan, I gave up and just walked out frustrated. What a waste of my time.
By the way, the checker that was drunk awhile ago and smelled strongly of alcohol turned me off from shopping here ever again, but I thought I would give it another try. Now, I'll never be back.
