The best bar in town, maybe in the county. The menu rotates often, but there's always at least one pasta dish (my favorites). Really inspired fusion foods as well. The cocktails are fun and well formed, or if you have a specific hankering, the mixologists run a full service bar and then some. It's a quiet place, big enough for an intimate dinner with no eavesdropping but small enough that it never gets rowdy.

Lark is my favorite restaurant in Janesville. After dining there once/month for the past several months while visiting my mom I feel like a regular. There is almost no staff turnover so I'm greeted by name and my preferences are remembered. The menu changes frequently and despite being a pescatarian who also has to eat low carb for health reasons, I never have trouble finding delicious options and I haven't had the same meal twice. The chef does wonderful and inventive dishes with local produce, there is always at least one fish option, and Evan the bartender - should really say master mixologist - keeps the cocktail list interesting and seasonal. On this visit I particularly enjoyed his slight variation (addition of a small amount of green chartreuse) on a classic Boulevardier and the Rye and Thyme. The roasted brussels sprouts and squash puree small plate I stared with was divine. With a hit of chili oil on top it was the perfect balance of slightly smoky and bitter from the brussels sprouts, sweetness from the squash, and linger heat from the chili oil. The sauteed branzino with sun dried tomato entree was crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked and moist on the outside, well seasoned, and complimented nicely by the slight acidity from the tomatoes. I've already booked a table for my trip next month and can't wait to see what new options I'll have to choose from.

Vegetarian options: They source really great local produce which is used creatively, so there are plenty of vegetarian options to choose from on the small plates menu. I've easily put together a strictly vegetarian meal by ordering 2-3 small plates.

Dietary restrictions: My server Alexander is always happy to confirm ingredients with the kitchen to ensure there isn't anything in a dish I can't eat. And although I've never had to request that something be left out, I'm confident they would accommodate if possible.

One of the nicest restaurants I’ve ever been to. Our waiter Alexander and Bartender Evan were amazing. They made our experience wonderful.
Alexander took time to explain the food menu and Evan came to our table to tell us more about the ingredients in the cocktails.
Our favorite on the drink menu was called Best Intentions.
They ask you what flavors and spirits you like and Evan created us cocktails based on our answers. We loved both of them. What a talent.
We tried the Bronzino and gnocchi which arrived at our table hot and delicious. Every thing was seasoned to perfection. When my husband doesn’t ask for salt or pepper, I know they did it right.
The kitchen staff is very talented.

Another one of our favorites was the bread that we were served before our dinner.

The atmosphere was peaceful and enjoyable. Soft music in the background and we enjoyed having a conversation without a lot of background noise.
The restaurant wasn’t very busy, so we enjoyed talking to the staff and really took our time with dinner.
This restaurant is definitely one we will frequent often.
We are also going to try their sandwich shop sometime next door.

We went on a night when there was a concert in the courthouse park right across the street. The restaurant was EMPTY which made things feel very strange. I would recommend the owners explore adding more tables outside during events like that. Other than that, our experience was superb.

The best steak frites I have ever had, anywhere. Unique because it was a 20oz ribeye. Fries were perfect. Pork chop was also very good.

Drinks were excellent. I was very impressed with the mocktail options and really enjoyed mine as I was DD.

Service was very friendly and quick, though take that with a grain of salt since we were literally the only people in the entire place.

Recommend!

The last time I visited this restaurant the service was horrible. The food was just ok. For the price there are much better options in Madison or even Beloit. I do not recommend.

We are so sad, visited our favorite restaurant for the first time this year with high expectations. We were very disappointed. Had reservations and greeted with a smile and a very professional host/server. Then was greeted by our server, first night for him, dressed in a football sweatshirt with his fly open the whole service. We ordered a bottle of wine, he bragged about how he was happy that he formerly worked at a wine bar and was ready to serve us our wine. Well he should properly learn how to serve wine, ordering a bottle is all about the experience, show the label at all times, set the cork upright to display quality, pour a taste to the person ordering only to ensure quality, wait for a response then pour, and check on the table to repour. He did none of these. Then our dinner, we ordered 2 apps, the lamb meatballs with mint and a BBQ sauce and the lump crab toast (not lump but shreaded, like from a can) both were mediocre. For dinner I ordered the fazilleti pasta with pork ragu (fabulous) and my husband ordered the Butter Burger, this fell below standards, when ordering he asked the server if he can get that medium, the server said of course. The burger was overcooked, completely dry and horrible. He sent it back, and the original burger was sent back to our table. The server indicated that the chef said that the burger can not be cooked med or any temperature because how they "PREP" the burgers and that they were so thin they would not be able to make it any other way. That means to us that the burgers are pre cooked, even a diner can make the burgers cooked to order. We had asked if the owners changed, the host/server indicated that owner is the same but the Chef, well he is new and is an awarding winning Michelin Star chef from NY. I can not believe that!!, if he was, he would have visited our table. Food is not how it was in 2021,22,or 23. We miss the fabulous ladies who ran the front of the house and the spectacular and innovative chef that created the food with passion. We will give it another try in hopes that they make some changes.
