On a recent visit to Madison, I decided to take my well traveled wife for a mid day Italian meal at this place with a seemingly Italian name. While our meal was average, and I say that kindly, the staff was just plain clueless and inept. We ended up with the hostess, the bar man and a very rookie waitress (they said it was her second day working there) at our table when we ordered a Campari and soda as a drink before our meal. No one, and I mean no one, even knew what Campari was and when we pressed them to tell them it was Italian and very standard in a real Italian bar restaurant, the rookie waitress rolled her eyes and sighed audibly and insultingly as if we were from outer space. Then, as a second choice, we asked for an Aperol Spritz, another genuinely Italian pre-dinner drink (I didn't use the term "aperitif" since I was sure it would be lost on these three workers). Of course, they had never heard of Aperol and it wasn't in the bar's inventory. Then the bar manager chirped, "But, we have Cointreau," which of course is a French liquer and is often consumed as a digestif after a meal. Bottom line, this restaurant is an unsophisticated fake "Italian" establishment, with a Grade F bar inventory and Grade F staff who don't know the first thing about beverages. So, we settled for a vodka and tonic. As for the meal, my wife ordered a fish dish, consisting of three tiny fillets, one of which was so inedible that we thought it had somehow escaped the microwave. I had a meatball dish which was nearly tasteless. We had patronized this place once before and were disappointed then, but giving it a second chance was an even worse disappointment. Perhaps a better name than "Benvenuto," which means "Welcome" in Italian, would be "Stay Away" in English. Totally unsophisticated...a waste on every level, food and beverage.

I ordered a dinner entrée and the pasta trio for take out. When I got the food home, I found 3 of the 4 items were inedible because they were so incredibly salty (and I'm a salt-a-holic). I took 2 bites and was unable to eat the rest. My husband and daughter also said it was incredibly salty. Had I been dining in the restaurant, I would have returned my meal (and I have NEVER, EVER done this before). To have one entrée over-salty, I could almost understand; however, 3 of 4 items being over salty is quite another. I tried this restaurant after a long hiatus due to poor quality food, and this experience was worse. There are much better choices for Italian food in Madison.

Overall a good meal, between the calzones, tortellini etc, everything was good. Only troubling thing was our spinach artichoke dip was a spinach mushroom dip. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but first time I've ever seen that substitution. Our server was nice, we'd likely return.

We chose the lasagna family meal for four on restaurant to go week. The meal was great. Lasagna was delicious, the salad was huge and fresh. It included lots of garlic bread and dipping sauce and 6 reall y good chocolate cookies. All this for $40! It was really a meal for 6. During the pandemic we have had take out from more than 20 different restaurants, and Benvenuto’s topped them all!

We were a group of 9. Did call earlier to make a reservation. Went to the bar for Happy Hour. Service was a little slow, but bartender knew what she was doing. Once our whole group arrived we were seated at a round table in the bar. Which they set up last minute. A bit cozy for 9 adults. Food was good. Chicken tenders had a nice flavorful breading. The crispy chicken salad used cut up chicken tenders. The pork chops were good. 2 people ordered the smothered fish, and they said it was delicious. Was not impressed with the onion straws. Benvenuto's has a card and you can earn points to use for free drinks or food. Can also get a birthday entree, which was used. We waited a long time to get our food. Was not busy at all. Yes a group of 9 all ordering different things you need to expect delays, but it was a long delay. Overall we had a nice time. Hostess, waitress, and bartender all were very pleasant and wanted to please you.

The Bread Basket is the main cafeteria in SSM Health St Mary's Hospital and it is open to the public. There is a wide variety of food options and overall, the food quality is above what you wold expect in an institutional setting. The staff is friendly and the prices are excellent, given the portion sizes.
