“Even though something got mixed up and our reservation wasn't showing up, we still got seated and helped immediately. Rose was a PHENOMENAL waitress, and was so kind and friendly. Her recommendations were amazing, and she came back so frequently to check on us/the food. For our dessert course, she even made sure to get us skewers that match my split dyed hair, which was an adorable gesture. On top of the great service, everything tasted delicious and came in timely manners.”

Fairchild 2611 Monroe St, Madison Fine Dining • $$$

“One of the best meals and experiences we’ve ever had. The food is top notch, and somehow the service still outdid it. Sophie was our waitress for the night and was phenomenal. We dined at Fairchild for our 10-year wedding anniversary and she made it a big deal. She mentioned to us that some people will split the entrees/pasta dishes into two shared courses which was perfect. We started with the unbelievable hamachi and mushroom tempura. Both were unreal. You can feel the precision in the kitchen. Then we got the Riso Nero (this is a guess on the spelling) and each piece of seafood was perfectly melted-in-the-mouth delicious.Next was the steak, which paired nicely with the truffles and other items that they put on the plate. We enjoyed it with the Brussels sprout side and fava bean side with the steak course as well. The Brussels sprouts were good but the fava beans outshined it. The herbs they are cooked with take it to another level. We finished off with the pumpkin panna cotta dessert and it truly could go toe-to-toe with some of the best desserts that exist. What a wonderful experience and we can’t wait for another opportunity to go back!”

“WOWWWW! As a non-vegan, I was definitely skeptical of this restaurant, but that was my mistake. This is one of the very best restaurants in all of Madison. It was so good that I went twice in one week because I couldn't stop thinking about how fantastic the food was! The service was excellent and Juan, the chef, made our experience super memorable. Make sure to get the chickpea paneer and the bao, they are both to die for! I'll be coming back (maybe again next week haha) and plan on taking all of my friends and family there to impress them. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough! Thank you to the staff for such an amazing dinner!!”

RED

RED 316 W Washington Ave #100, Madison Sushi • $$$

“I've always enjoyed RED but haven't been here in a couple years. My friend does not like raw fish and yet as her first time here she had a delightful experience with the cooked items offered. The reservation process was simple and by chance we were seated at one of my favorite tables (by chance? Hmmm) Service was brisk in the best possible way - our drinks arrived quickly as did the appetizer we wanted to accompany them. A favorite has always been the vegetarian shiitake tempura roll and was well received by my friend as was the California roll with king crab. As I had my raw fish she had king crab nigiri which was a hit. This was the perfect place to precede a performance by our wonderful symphony orchestra at the Overture Center a few blocks away. My date thought our server was both cute and charming and he was thoroughly professional - we could have not asked for better. Bravo RED”

“This restaurant's best offerings are their American style maki sushi exploding with all kinds of fillings and toppings. The appetizers and other offerings are pretty basic. The nigiri was disappointing but as expected for this part of the country. The cocktail menu is interesting, but I haven't sampled much from it yet. The new decor is kitschy and over the top, but it imparts a fun, casual vibe if you just kind of relax and enjoy it. Some of the sushi plates had little orchid / flower sprays on them that were quite visually appealing.”

“super cute pizza restaurant in a literal home! it's a small cozy place with a unique menu. the server was soo with me tonight, she recommended the pork confit AND the goomba with bacon (unfortunately no ranch dipping but she also got me there). i loved that the pizza was thin crust but i do wish there was a dipping sauce bc the crust was a bit dry. the bacon was center cut and thick so it was heavy but tasty on the pizza. the app, pork confit, was sooo tender and juicy, very happy we went with this choice! we got a bottle of moscato to pair and that was also delicious. overall recommend this restaurant but would make a reservation bc it's a really small place”

“Wife and I pass by Zen now and then, and this last weekend with the weather the way it was, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to try them out. We walked in to a fairly busy restaurant, with only a couple of small tables open right by the door, the staff member asked if we minded sitting at the bar, which we had no problem with. We ordered, our meal and drinks, which by the way were on special, a buy one get one beer! So I couldn't pass that up. The ramen was delicious, chicken was crispy, and the broth was tasty! The wait staff was very friendly and helpful! He appeared to be the only one on duty and he was WORKING it!! Bravo to him!!! The casual atmosphere was nice and enjoyable with soft lounge versions of pop songs playing in the background. Make sure you check in if it your first time, you should get a surprise! We will definitely be back!”

Burger King 719 W Badger Rd, Madison Fast Food • $

“Not to throw around comparisons but...... Burger King's fries are waaayyyy better compared to let's say McDonald's! Burger King's fries are thicker, saltier, and actually come out hot. I ordered a sausage and egg muffin from the breakfast menu. The sausage patties are thicker even than McDonald's and have way more egg. I don't do fast food often, but next time I do it'll be Burger King!”

Burger King 6909 Odana Rd, Madison Fast Food • $

“I go to this place nearly every day for a Diet Coke and sometimes some other things. This Burger King has some of the chillest employees out of all the fast food places in that area, and they are also nice and considerate. One of them is always particularly nice to my kids when I come through with them. She's usually there in the mornings. Another one, a dude with anime tattoos, greets me by name. One of the managers was just really nice about it when I got mad about not getting a cheeseburger that I thought I ordered and didn't. And several times, over the course of many years, I've told different employees that they gave me a regular Coke instead of Diet. They usually will have me test out the second drink and try to get it fixed right away. The food is good here, too. None of the surrounding fast food restaurants do better fries, or better frozen Cokes. This Burger King puts the frozen drinks in paper cups so they hold cold better than the plastic ones from McDonald's. Their chocolate chip cookies, when they're fresh, blow all the other desserts at other fast good places' desserts out of the water.I could probably do without being told, "Welcome to Burger King, where you rule." If ever a 'Burger King Land' amusement park is opened, I will go there and enjoy being told that. As it is, I find it a bit much as part of a daily experience of getting a Diet Coke. It's a tad embarrassing. I know that isn't this Burger King's fault, so I won't hold it against the place.Kid-friendliness: They have crowns for kids, different foods that kids like, and they are nicer to kids than most places.”

Two medium eggs with hash browns a portion of meatloaf and a one delicious pancake. At first, I was skeptical about the combination… but there’s something magical about dipping the perfectly spiced meatloaf into the runny yolk of eggs that just doesn’t compare to anything else. The hash browns are the perfect combination of pillowy and crunchy.. The pancakes? Absolute perfection. I’m lamenting that I’ll never be able to find anything like the when I leave. I’m convinced that their grill is so perfectly seasoned that it adds a unique flavor to the pancakes that can only be found at Ogdens.I’ve had the chance to go several times during my time in Madison, and NEVER leave disappointed. I’m going to miss it so much!”

“Dave's Hot Chicken lives up to its name – they're not kidding about the heat! I'm a fan of spicy food, and their "Hot" had enough kick to make my nose run, but it was still delicious. The chicken tenders are juicy, the batter is crispy, and the sauce is flavorful. I also appreciate the simplicity of the menu – you're here to focus on the heat. The crinkle-cut fries are the perfect side, and the kale slaw provides a nice counterpoint to the chicken. My only complaint is that it can get a bit pricey, especially if you want to cool your mouth off with one of their soft drinks - as that cost extra. Still, if you live for that fiery burn, Dave's Hot Chicken is worth checking out.”

“Wowwwww.I'm in Madison for a business trip and didn't have a clue what I was going to do for food, since I'm vegan and prefer gluten free options. I've already resigned to my fate when traveling with a crew of carnivores (zero shade, just dietary differences), so imagine my surprise when my colleagues said they know a place with good food and they brought me HERE!!!I looked up at the menu and thought I went to heaven. Soooo many options, for the first time on the trip I actually had to think what I WANT to have rather than what I CAN have. And then the food arrived and it DELIVERED.The tofu chilli buff (I think that's what it was called?) was spectacular, and really nailed the spice balance. Our entire crew was well fed and enjoyed the place very much.I look forward to going back again. Might just get take out from there for the duration of my time in WI.Excellent job to the restaurant team ??I highly recommend you go check them out ?”

The nachos were delicious and the street corn was sublime. Service was good as well. It can get quite busy, and is louder than most establishments due to the small size. They only take cash and do not have a phone. If you want to maximize your chance of getting a spot - hit it up at an off time. “Donuts are fresh and delicious. Food is all delicious and made to order. Highly recommend. Service has always been exceptional, until today. This morning's visit was very different than our previous visits. We arrived to get donuts and some coffees, the restaurant was bustling, no wait. My husband inquired if they had yeast raised donuts, we got a response, "These donuts are all cake donuts." from the woman taking our order. Very short tone layered with annoyance. We then started our order. Again, my husband asked for half a dozen hot n' fresh donuts. She again with an annoyed tone asked, "What flavor??" I responded, "Cinnamon Sugar, please." She packed our donuts in a small box. They smelled divine, we were so excited. We decided to get 6 more glazed donuts, my husband asked, "We'd like 6 glazed, 3 regular glazed..." He was interrupted by the woman behind the counter, who snapped, "SO, YOU ACTUALLY WANT A DOZEN DONUTS?" We were stunned, we stood there for a moment unsure what to say. My husband responded, "Yes, 3 regular glazed and 3 chocolate glazed." She then grabbed a large box for a dozen or more donuts, literally opened our box of six hot and fresh Cinnamon sugar donuts and forcefully dump threw them in the box. Then, rearranged them and got our other 6 donuts. We were stunned by the rude tone and frustration that was shown to us on our visit today. We decided to pay and leave instead of oredering coffees to go with our morning treat. This experience this morning really soured our donuts and also have us questioning whether or not we will return. Sharing in case this is a chronic problem or in case we were singled out for some reason. Hoping all the patrons inside and those who walked in after us didn't experience the same level of disrespect to their food or in the treatment.”

“Hard to give a rating - I want it to be 5 stars, and for Madison it perhaps is, but when comparing versus similar price points in major food cities around the country or in Europe - the food falls short. All the dishes were well presented and generally good, but there wasn’t really a standout, special dish - which at this price point is a disappointment. The dishes are comparable to other good restaurants in Madison, just in the form of a 13 course menu and a little extra creativity in some of them.Service and chef are exceedingly kind and good hosts, and the drink menu is good/unique and pairings matched well - so definite positives there.Constructive feedback for the restaurant would be to pair down the quantity served with each course a little bit and use that saved time/money/effort to introduce more ‘gastronomique’ refinement to the ingredients. The quantity can be a bit too much - we were served 4 dessert courses which were each about the size of a normal dessert plate elsewhere. This was far too much and took me from feeling comfortably full to just gorged and still ‘needing’ to eat a ton more super sweet dessert because it was next up on the course. Four times. Looking around, most of the guests were barely eating these desserts because it was just too much. Focusing more on the distribution of courses (a stronger balance towards lighter/whimsical courses at the beginning of the menu and having truly “unbutton my pants good” savory courses mid menu, and fewer, less sweet dessert courses) would really improve the pacing of the meal and give more flavor/textual/sensory variety to the meal as a whole.”

“We held our wedding reception at The Madison Club and we highly recommend it to other couples! We loved the classic, timeless, and memorable look and feel of the Club itself, central location downtown, and found it especially beneficial that they offered so many wedding services. From catering (cake included in our selected package), beverages, tables, chairs, linens, place settings, day-of getting ready spaces, and an on-site event coordinator. This was very important to us as we didn't want to have even more vendors to coordinate with, and the Club being a "one stop shop" was incredibly helpful in simplifying our planning. They have so many options to choose from so you can offer more classic wedding meals or something a little more adventurous (which we did and loved). The food is truly delicious! They also provide a list of vendors recommended by the Club and we were able to work with a few of them for our day. Alex, our event coordinator, was so responsive, patient, and accommodating throughout our planning process which entailed many emails, questions, and changes :) He was amazing to work with! The menu is creative without being inaccessible, the plates were perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. We tried the lobster roll and the red snapper, but saw so many of the other dishes as they were happily received by other guests. The food we had was without flaw, and the cocktails were pretty and perfectly balanced. Still, perhaps the best part of our experience was the excellent service! We were fortunate to have a great duo of bartenders on a Wednesday eveing who (from someone in the industry) worked so wonderfully as a team, kept a tidy bar, and expertly crafted each cocktail for the packed house while still remaining so attentive to us diners at the bar. “Been here a handful of times and never disappointed. Had not had the clam chowder before. Maybe the best I’ve had anywhere in the country with all due respect to all the Baltimore/East coast and west coasters. Obviously always comes down to choice but really nice balance of viscosity and flavor without being so creamy all it becomes is cream soup with potatoes and chunks of clams. I almost cancelled the fish and just got more soup…lake perch was a little undercooked but I knew I should’ve said ‘well done’ cuz they were busy, but didnt. Call that my fault. Fish was solid, clean and flavorful and not greasy or over breaded. Perfect level of batter, they just got antsy.”

The planning process was simple and Steph was very kind to answer all our questions. We were originally going to use both the bar and private event space, but ended up just using the bar area and it worked out well for the amount of attendees. The draft cocktails made for quick service for the group and everyone enjoyed the variety of both pre-made and built cocktails. Rare Steakhouse 14 W Mifflin St, Madison Steak House • $$$$

“We returned to celebrate our impending birthdays together and were, once again, very happy with our decision. We had a 7pm reservation on a Saturday night that was promptly honored. We were offered a table or booth and opted for booth. Justin, our server, introduced himself with a contagious smile & great attitude. He took our drink order & gave us a moment to talk & consider our options. We chose the Maryland crab cake, Caesar & a mid rare 32 ounce in house dry-aged, bone in porterhouse steak. The crab cake arrived in minutes. It was on the small side and shared the plate with a delicious fennel salad. We shared the crab cake appetizer. The cake had a perfectly toasted lightly breaded exterior with a "floaty" lightly connected and perfectly seasoned interior with a remoulade dollop on the side. Absolute winner. The Caesar arrived as we finished off the crab cake and was not long on the table. Lightly creamy Caesar dressing with chopped iceberg leaves (no crotons). Poof! Gone!! We then were served the steak. Perfectly cooked with an excellent Maillard reaction crust, seasoned nicely but arrived room temperature which was only slightly disappointing. Justin asked what we thought & I expressed exactly what I've written here. Without hesitation he offered to fire up a new one, but we declined as the flavor was spot on. The manager came over to apologize, touched the platter (cool to the touch) & appreciated our feedback. Justin returned to communicate that desserts & dessert cocktails were on the house. We were impressed by the generous offer & accepted. We had the bananas Foster and cranberry creme brûlée with a cappuccino martini. Justin presented the creme brûlée & went about making the bananas foster table side. Fun show with very delicious results (I found the banana bread wanting though?) The brûlée was, apparently, too delectable to share. The martini was terrific as well. We ABSOLUTELY made the right decision in celebrating at Rare and will MOST CERTAINLY return again without a celebratory need. A wonderful experience again!”

“Visited today for Easter brunch. Not our first visit. As always, love the atmosphere and the food. Staff are always very pleasant. The amount and variety of food is well above average. There were 7 meats being carved at the table today. Ham, pork, chicken, sausage, lamb and two types of beef. In addition to the cinnamon dusted pineapple. All were excellent. The buffet food was very good with a few small exceptions. The lamb ragu was not good. The noodles were very overcooked and mushy. The breakfast potatoes were also way overdone. However, all the salads, the eggs, bacon, very large shrimp, cheeses, veggies and all the desserts were definitely on point. As a matter of fact I tried 9 desserts and 8 of them were excellent. My husband said his brandy old fashioned was excellent. I initially ordered a chocolate martini (my ho to drink) and it was NOT good. I asked our waitress to take it away and bring me a sparkling wine (the sweetest they offer) instead. Honestly, not impressed with that either but by that point I'd given up on getting a good drink. That was disappointing considering we used to get good chocolate martinis here in the past. All in all it was a nice meal and we will be back again. But I really hope they can figure out the bar/drink situation before we return as I generally have 2-3 drinks per meal.”

“The one and only is a fine madison, wi restaurant in Monroe street. Parking in the street is usually available before 6 pm. After 6 pm you may need to drive into nearby residential streets. The food is consistently delicious except for most of the desserts. The Keylime pie is always delicious and has big fans. I love bread pudding, however, it was cooked in a very different style that rendered it dry and more crunchy.l - not what I preferred. The appetizers are delicious and varied. The entrées are fantastic most recently the special chicken Parmesan was incredibly tasty and very nicely breaded. I enjoyed the polenta previously, and they were very kind to add some pork belly on top of it, which is a delicious twist. as a homage to prior establishment in the same location, brasserie v, they have a delicious collection of Belgian ales. For those that like brown drinks, they seem to have a pretty good collection of rye and bourbon as well though I haven’t tried it overall this is a great new favorite restaurant and the prices are reasonable for a medium higher end restaurant.Parking: You can generally find parking on the street pretty easily before 6 PM. Things get crowded after six and you’ll have to look for parking on the side streets. You can find parking on the residential streets about one to two blocks away pretty easily.”

Nani Restaurant 518 Grand Canyon Dr, Madison Chinese • $$

“Some of the comments are petty and unnecessarily harsh. This restaurant is one of the few bastions of authentic Chinese food in the Madison area. I order from Nani's frequently and have never had an issue. I was really impressed by their dim sum offerings- definitely the largest and best quality in Wisconsin. I had been craving preserved egg congee and couldn't find it anywhere else. They have soup with fish air bladder which I have also never seen in Madison. If you nitpick about not having a three star Michelin experience, you don't have realistic expectations. Complaining about rising prices and "smaller portions"? The cost of raw ingredients doesn't stay the same forever! If you've ever been to SF, things are twice the price and half the volume. These prices are totally reasonable- The restaurant is just trying to get by. People are so short sighted- Before you leave a harsh review complaining about the "ambiance" in a casual family run restaurant, maybe think about the consequences. If you don't support restaurants in your community then they will go away. Remember not to complain when there are no decent Chinese food options left.”

“We had a wonderful Easter brunch experience. Can’t wait to go back for more. The place was crowded and busy, but the staff was very attentive and friendly. We were lucky to have a table by the windows overlooking the lake. Our table enjoyed the ‘mimosa sampler’.The plates were plenty full with food. The French toast slices were light and fluffy. It was plenty of whipped cream and fruit to complement the dish. The side of scrambled eggs was prepared perfectly, not overcooked or runny. The hashbrowns, prepared with some red and green peppers, we’re also very tasty. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfectly salted; no need to add more salt. What I will order the next time will be the smoked salmon Benedict. It’s a wonderfully balanced dish. The salmon had a nice smokey flavor, not a strong salmon taste at all. The eggs were also poached perfectly, with the runny yolk complementing creaminess of the sauce. Capers add a nice little bite to the whole dish.I had gone to the state house several years ago and did not have a good experience. Today’s brunch experience was certainly a redemption. I can’t wait to go back and try other items on the menu.”

“Fantastic food and a great wine list. We enjoyed it all. Our service was slightly slow and we received our salads before our appetizers but it worked out okay. We will be back with a bigger group of friends in July for the music on the deck!”

“My husband and I came here after a recommendation when our cooking class was cancelled. This was our first time here and it did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, we felt as though we were the only guests there. The service and food were exceptional. All of the staff were eloquently watching us to make sure we had the best service, it it was done in a manner we never knew they were watching to help us. This was by far the best service we ever experienced. Thank you to everyone who made us feel how “the other half live”. We will be back again!”

“I always enjoy my meal at Monty’s! Last night 1/14/23 my sister and I picked Monty’s for dinner! The food was good, the server did a great job! BUT the floor was littered with all kinds of things napkins, smushed French fry, a knife other things! On my way to the bathroom I noticed all that . I stopped at the counter and ask a person who was the boss, they said that they were the manager! All I said to them was ( take a look at your floor) Shortly after returning to my booth! I watched him come and begrudgingly pick up 2 pieces of paper and aggressively throw it in a bus tub! And he picked up the hazardous knife! This is a very bad impression! It was maybe 6:pm and not as busy as usual! If I was a manager I would have gotten a broom and dust pan and made sure I got it all, or ask a staff member to do it! Thank you for the good meals and good service! But by the cleanliness of your restaurant I will think twice before coming back! Thank you”

“Unique atmosphere and menu. The vibe is moody. Delicious food and drinks. I had the beet salad with citrus, pistachios, goat cheese, and jalapeño vinaigrette. Super fresh. The champagne cocktail was delish too. Definitely recommend this one!”

“Food was absolutely delicious, the lamb and potato palmenis were so savory and the cool runnings drink was very good. Waited about 45 min, which isn't bad for a Saturday night, and it was more than worth it.”

Butterbird 1134 Regent St, Madison Chicken Shop • $$

“First time trying Butterbird, it was good chicken! For some reason I couldn't tell on the menu if the sandwich came with sides or not. I ended up ordering the 3pc tender plate which comes with fries and coleslaw. Added a drink to the order as well. Tried the dill ranch sauce, it was ok, was hoping for a better flavor pairing I think.Atmosphere is certainly cool and takes you back in time. Overall, the service was great, food was good and will return to try the chicken sandwich or burger.”
