“Umm where have we been living in Middleton and not visiting here until now?! This was a spur of the moment Monday dinner decision, and it was wonderful. Quick and friendly service, fantastic food, and reasonable pricing. We got apps, a few rolls, some ramen, and we’d order all of it again. We’ll be back!“

“Honestly, I'd been sleeping on this place for far too long. We ate at the bar and everything was fantastic from the apps, to the dumplings to the Ramen. The brussel sprouts were a standout app. The dumplings were beautifully handmade. The Tonkatsu Ramen was so solid- sumptuous, perfectly salty, gorgeous hand pulled noodles. Lastly, the price was really affordable. Three people ate really well with drinks and we got of there for under $120. Bravo, Umami! We can't wait to go back.“

“This is an excellent location and a great addition to the state street food scene. The atmosphere is immaculate—it's sort of a fantastical version of a Japanese Izakaya, with as many elements of Japanese culture as possible represented in the establishment's decor. The food is also excellent, and speaking as someone who is half Japanese, I've tasted things there I would normally only taste in Japan, which is impressive because the establishment is not Japanese owned. One small and rather particular note I have is about the rice: the side of rice I was served was quite typical of Chinese style rice; long grain rice cooked to be lighter and drier than the typical Japanese style. I would recommend cooking shorter grain white rice (sometimes labeled as sushi rice) and cooking it in the Japanese way so it comes out a little stickier. [EDIT: the last few times I've been the rice has been done in a more Japanese style and goes better with the food they serve]. Overall though, Izakaya Kuroyama is a great dinner place and late night spot perfect for a meal and/or drink after a late night shift or to close out a night out on the town. I hope it lasts for many years to come.“

“When I tell you this is my new go to. Tea - delicious without the taste of fake sweeteners. Appetizers - PHENOMENAL and came out fast! Ramen - you can TASTE the love. Homemade broth and noodles really stand out.
We had the takoyaki and karage. Honestly, the juiciest fried chicken I've ever had. Will be ordering each time. Also, the tonkotsu ramen (rich, nutty flavor) and Miso ramen (buttery and bursting with flavor) were just what you need on a cold day.
Plus, the atmosphere was astounding and super nostalgic if you're an anime fan. The vibes were just warm, welcoming, and you could hear customers and staff singing or laughing. Such positive energy!“
