This is about as good as a brew pub gets. Closest comparison is Deschutes Brewery in Portland Oregon. Excellent pub fare and remarkably good (i.e., great) beers.Don’t expect fine dining, but pub food doesn’t get much better than here. Outstanding service. We drive from Madison to trollville to enjoy ourselves here.

We did a day trip to Mr. Horeb just for something to do. We decided to eat lunch at The Grumpy Troll. The atmosphere was nice and our waitress was good. We each ordered a burger. I chose the Grump Chips as my side and my wife ordered french fries. My burger was done just right, and the Grump Chips went well with the sauce that comes with those. My wife's burger was a bit underdone. When the waitress brought the credit card machine to my table, I was surprised. Virtually every place I have ever used a card takes the card to the register and brings back a paper receipt so that I can decide the tip privately. Not here. She watched the entire transaction. I was outraged that the tip choices STARTED at 20% and went up to a whopping 25%!!!!!!!! And of course, I had to make my choice with her watching. What a sleazy way to conduct business and ruin what was otherwise a good dining experience. Next time I get bushwhacked like that, I will leave a ZERO for the tip. They need to pay their people and stop expecting customers to pay the wages. Only cheap owners would resort to this tactic. Be warned.

We were wandering around downtown on foot when it started to rain, so we ducked in to the pub to wait for the weather to clear. We weren't hungry but the pretzel and beer cheese soup sounded good so we ordered them, thinking it would be a snack before a late lunch. HOLY COW. The pretzel was HUGE, and the soup portion was also generous. We shared both, and they were AMAZING. The house-made rootbeer was also fantastic. We walked away full and ended up skipping lunch. If we're ever in Mount Horeb again, we'll be back to order a proper meal!

The server was great, my burger was awesome. Had to wait a long time for our food. We did have a table of 10. Plates were mixed up. One person had to wait until they were done with their burger to get their fries.Kid-friendliness: Great kids menu

This is a nice place to visit if you are from out of town. Plenty of food choices and the staff are friendly and fun. We stopped in during a football game and the locals and staff are all joking and having a good time. Service was quick, but we also showed up in the mid afternoon and there was not many people in house. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food and the beers brewed on site were very good. A nice variety of craft beers were available. As we were leaving a group of snow mobile enthusiasts came in to warmup. Probably a thing to expect in the winter months.
Fortunately, it's not fast food. Unfortunately, it's average pub food. I wanted to love it, but the food was just average, and how do you describe that? It's kind of an if you know, you know thing. It wasn't a slow day on our visit, but it wasn't crazy busy, either, so I don't know what the deal was. I'm a big believer in second chances, so I would come back and give them another try, but I also feel that first impressions mean a lot, and there's wasn't great. The cocktails and beer were solid, so definitely stop in for one of those, but be open minded about the food..... 35/2024
