Quite possibly the worst meal I ever had.Ordered the “Full” slab of ribs and 7 ribs where plated dry and tasteless..My wife had the chicken - so salty my mouth is still burning 40 min later.
The Sunday night special is broasted chicken. It was very crowded. We waited about 40 minutes for a table and had a drink at the bar. The staff was friendly, and there was a wait for the broasted chicken-it is all you can eat, the portions are large-we were stuffed and didn't have seconds. Maybe because the cranberry walnut bread was so good! The chicken was a little salty but moist. Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberry jelly, and coleslaw were served with the chicken. We appreciated the supper club atmosphere!
Ordered 3 fish frys to go, $50 with tip. Perfect square cubed fish was brown and grey on the inside and smelt. Cold slaw and the potato salad were uneditable. Everything tasted like it was made days or weeks earlier. All food went straight into the garbage can. I’ll never be back
All great dinner and drinks! Dinning room was the same 25 years ago , but food was hot and tasty! Fish fry was great! Potato pancakes ok. Chicken and ribs really good. Drinks - blended margarita was a blast from the past and corbels and coke good. Waiting 1/2 hour and had a drink. Whole bill was $57 with tip. We will be back!
We had a party of 7 and had to wait to be seated but a traditional old fashioned made the time fly by. Everyone enjoyed the appetizers and entrees, the only thing that marred the night was the wait for the entrees. I saw some four tops turn over twice while we waited for our meals. The food and atmosphere was nice, the service could be improved. I’d go again but maybe not have such a large party.
Can't review the food as I haven't eaten here in quite some time but I do remember they had liver and onions that were yummy back in the day!Amy and I came in here this evening for a dessert cocktail which is their Brandy Alexander made by our favorite bartender here, Tom who's been here 32 years.
On Friday they have a fish fry... because Wisconsin.. it is all you can eat. They also have a broiled option, which they will make dairy free using a white wine if you are allergic. But enough about fish.. let's talk about the raisin walnut bread. It's so good. If you or someone with you has the fish fry you can get more bread.. get more raisin walnut bread. That is all. Sidenote the servers were kind.
This place sounded good but fish was just squares that had been cooked for hours and kept warm. Potato salad was good but not slaw and macaroni. The pork chops had no flavor at all most likely cooked from a frozen state and not fresh. When we were finely seated I noticed there was only two butter in dish so after ordering I asked to have more because there was bread and baked potato. She was put out I felt as she brough a salad bowl size full. And seating they have regulars come in reserve table and sit at bar and drink then their table is available for them as everyone else coming in has to wait long waits, We were three and they would not put us at a table set for four and possibly six. A two has to wait for a two. This place is not good and not worth the wait. Even front staff is rude (hostess)
Interesting because I posted a disappointing review and it never appeared so here goes again. We are “out of towners” and came to visit local Rhinelander friends. Our one and only “nice dinner out” to treat our friends and show our appreciation we chose Al-Gen. Had a nice drink and the bar before we were seated (we had reservations but still had to wait) Only 6 tables were taken, I assume they only have one waitress because otherwise there is no excuse not to be seated. After 1 1/2 hours our food finally came. BTW we came for the prime rib which was not available so we ordered New York strips. They were over cooked and like eating leather. Complained to the waitress and she defended the restaurant by saying it’s difficult to get “medium rare” when you cook FROZEN steaks. We had to ask for and then got attitude for several things, the crackers & cheese, the “filtered water from the bar” (because otherwise you get water from the sink that smells like eggs) we tried to laugh this off because we were out having a long awaited double date but on the way out the men stopped to share their dissatisfaction with the owner who never leaves his podium and informed him that the steaks were bad and had to be returned and replaced which the owner replied “yes, I heard”. He was cocky and arrogant and said “really, this is the 1st complaint we’ve had, I’ve been in business for 40 years”… We were shocked at his response and it went on from there until he threw his waitress under the bus and blamed everything on the “we have a National shortage going on or haven’t you heard” !! I mean really, who speaks to their patrons that just laid down $157 on a poor experience??? However, he never walks around the restaurant trying to help or offer a complimentary drink or desert. Our local friends said NEVER AGAIN!!
IT WS A RESTAURANT MY mother in Law wanted to visit . We were coming back from an Antigo trip and decided to stop for Mother's Day. Mr. S. Took my reservation and said it would be 20 to 30 minutes wait. It was about 30 min. And we were seated and the 3 of us decided on the Chicken special. The atmosphere so pleasant and quiant. The way nwoods rest should look. Our waitress was a delight courteous un rushed polite and effcient. The bread was very good as was the sides of tuna salad, pot salad and cole slaw and cranberry. Our food arrived and it was hot well presented on the plate. The chicken was done to perfection the dressing absolutely favorite like Moms, and the potatoes perfect. If the Gravy was not homemade it sure fooled me. The whole experience surpassed expectations including my MIL. The only thing different would to make a reservation. THANK YOU so much for being the supper club everyone Raves about in Rhinelander.

What an experience! Called ahead to make a reservation and was told they didn't take them. Showed up and sat at the bar for our twenty minute wait. Bartender was awesome and so we're the drinks. We watched people coming in the door that obviously knew the hostess get seated before us , we witnessed numerous empty tables sit vacant but we were still not seated , the hostess asked several people that had been there before us if they were ready to be seated or if they were still "relaxing". Empty tables looked to be held for them. 45 minutes into our wait we asked how much longer it would be and then we were immediately offered a table that had been empty for over a half hour. I know because I was looking at my watch. We have eaten here several times before and have had good meals and drinks. The hostess always rubbed us the wrong way but we dealt with it but tonight was unacceptable. It was obvious that since we were a party of two we weren't going to be seated until a table for two opened up. Meanwhile the empty four tops were just that. Empty. By the time we were able to get a table I had already paid our bar tab and we left . Sorry to say but we won't be back. To bad because they do have good food. The owners need to send in a soy and watch the hostess on a Friday night.
Al-Gens' one of those Supper Clubs you make every effort to go to when your in the vacinity. In my case I drove across four counties just to enjoy another outstanding meal there. We ordered a Porterhouse and a Scallops dinner and they were both wonderful and more than enough to share:)
I love this place everytime I'm in the north woods I end up at this warm cozy super club . Food was amazing this last trip was fish fry ? I try to extend my trip for Sunday chicken !! Not this time.
3.5 this was an ok experience. The employees were very nice and wouldn’t mind going again for them alone. Food was ok. Drinks were strong
What a wonderful trip to the past here. Come with an appetite and make reservations! This is quite the popular spot. Felt super homey and comfortable.
