This place has fallen on hard times since the founder died. They are short handed and have had to cut back on the beer garden, and the patio seating. This restaurant used to be a fun place to go to, but now that is all gone. I ordered the baby back ribs for lunch, and they came out dry. Took the restaurant over an hour to cook the food. The servers are argumentative, and combative at this place. Really a shame to see what this restaurant has become. The prices have gone up, and a lot what is advertised on the restaurant's website is gone. Definitely missing the old place, and shocked to what this restaurant has not become.
My wife and I came to Harper's Ferry for a long weekend and had dinner at The Anvil. The restaurant was extremely clean. Alyssa was our waitress and we couldn't have asked for better service. I had the best steak I've ever had. Their Mac and Cheese was delicious. The Cole Slaw was very good. I would really recommend this restaurant.
Great pulled pork sandwich, smoked right in front of the restaurant. In fact, I smelled it while driving by and just had to turn around and have lunch here. My waitress Jessie was very pleasant and helpful, and the place is very cozy with ample seating and a nice bar. They actually surprised me with a few non-alcohol beers to choose from. If you're in the area and can't deal with finding a parking spot down the street in the historic section, you can't beat The Anvil (open Thur-Sun, I noticed). They also have PLENTY of parking.
Great meal, very satisfying. Loved Maryland crab soup, Vodka seafood meal! Jessie our waitress was outstanding. She was knowledgeable, kind & so very gracious & courteous. She helped us with our great meal choices! Also we left a sweatshirt in the booth & she chased out out on the street to return it!!! That’s service! When visiting HF again will definitely stop here again! Thank you!
Our waitress Jessie made our evening at The Anvil fantastic! She insured that my husband's meal was indeed gluten-free as requested. We both had the crab soup as an appetizer. Absolutely delicious! The ribs and chicken were incredible. Meat on the ribs simply fell off the bone. The smoked mac & cheese to die for. And the giant scoop of vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce was the perfect ending. Jessie was so personable and friendly. We can't wait to go back!
Waitresses are lovely, food not so great even after trying 3 different times. I'm thinking that the kitchen might need training for timing and food temperatures. Each time I've had meat there it's always a cool temperature and the texture feels like it was just reheated and chewy. Desert pie is served in a bowl with ice cream (like soup) and was not heated. The ladies that work there are very sweet. The owner seems abrupt and edgy towards staff which was not pleasant to see. Also they have no wifi which is just a simple no brainer for a modern service business. People stay and eat and drink while they communicate with the world. This place could be so fantastic with some adjustments.
Not the most exciting meal. We were there at 4 p.m. for an early dinner and our server, while very pleasant - was not very fast. Our crab soup was not hot and kind of bland. The crab cakes were o.k. but not great. My husband's steak had lots of gristle and fat. In general - we weren't impressed. It definitely seems liked by the locals so I'm sure it has some redeeming features but we didn't see a lot of them.
I could say a few nice things about this restaurant but the rude bartender, Rene ruined our whole experience. My husband and I sat at the bar waiting for another couple. We ordered an appetizer from our waitress who was to seat us when the other couple arrived. I asked Rene if I could sample a taste of wine before I commit to buying a bottle. She knodded her head back and forth(like a hard no) with a very mean face. I accepted that and ordered it anyway. My husband and I while sitting there witnessed her being rude to other staff. We felt uncomfortable. My husband decided to order a whiskey sour with a certain type of whiskey from our waitress and then he noticed Rene was making it with the wrong whiskey and asked her if that drink was for him and she replied "yep." He then explained he didn't order it with that type of whiskey. She said the waitress didn't tell her that. And she also said she already made it. She was going to make us buy that drink. We told her we are not drinking and paying for a drink we didn't order. She didn't say anything else and then abruptly dumped the drink. We then asked to be seated at the table to get away from her. If we were not meeting the other couple, we would have left. I wanted to speak with a manager. I was informed that she is the manager. Wow! Who would ever employ this very rude person, and make her the manager. Shocking. We won't be back.
We had delicious crab cake sandwiches with wonderful pickles made on the premises. Lovely waitress . Enjoyed our lunch and glad we tried this place.
Incredible food! My wife had smoked brisket tacos and I had smoked wings. Everything full of flavor and large portions. Blue cheese was homemade and the best I’ve ever had. Wonderful friendly service as well. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced, local restaurant/bar this is it!

Excellent service. Incredible food. Ribs and crab cakes! Fresh coffee and pecan pie at the end!
Best food around, but what keeps my Family and I coming back over the years ~ AMBER. Anvil server. She is just (as Dad says), "THE BEST!" Great atmosphere, flows with Historic downtown Harpers Ferry. Very easy to find. You could throw a dart at the menu, wherever it lands will taste good! ?
The Anvil was quiet when we stopped by for a late lunch/early dinner. We had read reviews that the restaurant was not clean, dirty aprons, inattentiveness and so on. We found none of that. The restaurant was very clean and the waitresses' aprons were crisp and clean. The service was good. Blackened chicken and broccoli alfredo was delicious and the pasta serving was huge. My husband got the crab cakes. I wish I had as well. The taste was awesome, minimal breading and a large serving. The one thing I found strange was the lack of a small salad with entrees that cost 25 and 35 respectively. Also, no rolls. We will definitely return.
We have been going here for 30 years and always have a delicious meal, great service, and enjoy a wonderful atmosphere. Normally after church my wife and I visit to get a lunch and every dish is fantastic. Renee always makes sure The Anvil Restaurant provides great fresh food and friendly service at good prices. Today, our server Jessi was so friendly, personable, courteous, and professional, especially made it special today because we brought in guests from our church for the 1st time. They were just as delighted with food and service. Nothing compares to The Anvil. Thank you, Jessi and Renee (plus the chef), for making every visit feel as if we were at home.
I got the half rack ribs with Mac and cheese and French fries. Everything was delicious, the restaurant has a really cool vintage vibe to it. Great customer service by all who work here! If your in the eastern panhandle, it’s a must stop for great BBQ.
