“The Turf Bar & Lounge is the kind of place that looks like it has been accumulating stories, beer cans, and questionable decisions for several decades, and nobody has had the heart to clean any of it up. The interior is fantastic old-school barroom territory, with old stuff hanging everywhere you look, the sort of glorious visual clutter that makes modern bars feel like they were designed by a committee of dentists. There is character everywhere, and plenty of it.
The beer selection is equally respectable, with enough cold ammunition behind the bar to keep things interesting without turning the place into some ridiculous craft-beer laboratory. You come here for a beer, look around, and realize you could probably spend an hour just examining the walls.
The only downside, at least for me, is that smoking is still allowed inside. Some people will probably consider that a feature and immediately add another star. I considered it an atmospheric assault. Within minutes the place had taken on the unmistakable perfume of old cigarettes, beer and human history, and I found myself wondering whether I had accidentally stepped through a wormhole into 1968.
Still, four stars. The Turf has character, history and absolutely no interest in pretending to be something it isn’t. If you like your bars polished, sanitized and smelling faintly of scented candles, stay home. If you prefer them with a little smoke in the air and a lot of stories in the walls, this is your kind of joint.“
