We are originally from Japan and visited this restaurant while spending time in Calgary.

If you’re looking for a truly authentic Japanese restaurant in Calgary, this is the place to go.

We’re often skeptical about Japanese restaurants in North America, as many are owned and operated by non-Japanese cooks (mostly Koreans or SEA) without formal training in Japanese cuisine hence heavy to fancy looking rolls which are not authentic Japanese. However, this experience was a very pleasant surprise as Anzu is owned and operated by experienced Japanese.

We ordered a variety of appetizers and mains, including agedashi tofu, seaweed salad, chicken karaage, edamame, chirashi sushi. Even the tsukidashi accompanying beer was very authentic and good. Every dish was impressive — the dashi, overall seasoning, and freshness were spot-on. The sashimi preparation were done correctly and served fresh.

Our server were Japanese as well, which added to the authenticity and warm hospitality.

Sushi Bistro Anzu has become our go-to Japanese restaurant in Calgary. Highly recommended!

I'm extremely disappointed by my experience at Sushi Bistro Anzu. My birthday supper was ruined by a food allergy contamination. The service was terrible, almost comically bad. No offers to correct their mistakes were made. DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES.

Excellent food. Beef don is especially tasty with tender thinly sliced beef plus very good rice. Salmon belly simply delicious

A great place for traditional Japanese food. The sushi and sashimi selection here is exceptional with highlights like tsubugai, aji, and ume shiso. Prices here are also very good. Rustic and clean. Loved it.

Sushi Anzu is a hidden gem!
Their lunch sets are some of the best I’ve ever had so much variety, very reasonably priced, and every bite is delicious. The quality and freshness of the food really stand out, and the portions are generous. It feels like a down-to-earth local secret spot that more people should know about. If you’re looking for a tasty, satisfying, and affordable Japanese lunch, this is the place to go.

One of the marks of great sushi is that the rice is well seasoned and perfectly textured. This alone makes Anzu out among other restaurants. I have been coming here for 6 years and the food hasn't decreased in quality in any way. The beef udon is lovely on a cold day and I love to get the grilled salmon belly. This is my go to location for authentic Japanese.

Small but consistent shop

We ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen and the Chicken Karaage Curry for our mains and was impressed with both. In particular I loved the chicken paired with the curry.

We also ordered the Three Fish Sashimi which was only okay. I don't particularly love any of the fish.
