This morning I went to the Hotspot Cafe on Van Horn Road. As a born and raised Alaskan, coming across a southern restaurant always sounded enjoyable. I seem to have finally found a true southern experience, after careful, consideration, I felt the need to post a review. I can say I would NOT recommend this establishment to anyone with ethnic diversity. I found the food confusing, I ordered a chili omelet to try something different and if raw onions, no seasoning and watery pinto beans is chili then it was the first real chili I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was also a new experience for me, with loud, pure white sentiments to how the youth can't manage money and would have no retirement to fall back on, and how we need to keep America’s bloodline pure and certain people are ruining it by coming to this country. Also, it was stated that they wouldn’t trust a Mexican to cook anything. The conversation was not what I would call comfortable for the poor Asian couple and the Mexican guy that was there with his girlfriend. The retirement planning discussion was also interesting to hear as both the waitress and owner are well into traditional retirement age. I hope the staff and patrons are able to be more welcoming the next time someone who doesn’t fit their purist ideals comes through. p.s. The sourdough toast that I ordered was fittingly the whitest white Wonderbread you can find.

Disappointing experience. The tables were dirty when we arrived, and it was clear they were understaffed. It took forever for someone to take our order. When we finally got our coffee, it was cold, and we had to track down the server just to get it replaced. No apology. There were three of us, and two of our orders were wrong. We just decided to eat them because it was too hard to get a hold of our server—she was clearly running around like a chicken with her head cut off. I came in expecting a fun, out-of-the-way café with some charm, but it was nothing but frustration and poor service. Won’t be back.

One of the best places to have breakfast in town. Get the Alaskan skillet. True Yum

I really enjoyed the food and the service here. Country fried steak was amazing and my wife's french toast was perfect. It has a small town diner charm.
