“It’s been 13 years since I last dined at the Flying V Bar & Grill at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, and my recent return was both a nostalgic trip and a delightful rediscovery. The restaurant’s ambiance has only become more spectacular over time—walk through the elegant wooden doors and you’re greeted by a warm, Southwestern-inspired interior, with rustic wooden beams, earth-toned walls, and glowing pendant lights that create an inviting lodge-like feel. Just beyond lies the terraced deck, where you can sip your cocktails while gazing out over a serene lake, the well-manicured golf course, and the breathtaking Catalina Mountains and the Tucson city lights in the distance. It’s a magical setting that showcases the desert’s natural beauty in all its twilight glory.
We began our evening with two signature cocktails: the PICANTE COWBOY and the CROWN JEWEL. The PICANTE COWBOY—featuring Maker’s Mark, Ancho Reyes Verde, ginger agave, lemon, and hellfire bitters—offered a bold, smoky flair underpinned by a subtle peppery kick. The ginger agave added a pleasant sweetness, balancing the tang of the lemon and spice from the bitters perfectly. Meanwhile, the CROWN JEWEL—mixed with Patron Reposado, pineapple turbinado, and orange bitters—delivered a tropical fruitiness that was neither saccharine nor overpowering. Both drinks were impeccably balanced and showcased thoughtful mixology, though at a premium price point. Sipping these alongside a basket of fresh artisan bread and a luxuriously whipped butter “concoction” felt like a quintessential Southwest indulgence.
For dinner, we shared the GRILLED PRAWNS—a dish composed of leche de tigre, cucumber, serrano, coconut milk, cilantro, and confit squash. The flavors dazzled with their bright acidity, creamy coconut undertones, and fresh herbal notes. My only critique was the portion—three sizable prawns made it awkward to share, and we found ourselves playfully vying for the “odd one out.” Moving on to our main course, we opted for the CHILEAN SEABASS. Presented in a pool of walnut consommé with kabocha squash and a dusting of pistachio matcha, the fish was expertly cooked to a buttery, flaky finish, seasoned just enough to enhance without overwhelming its natural richness. Curiously, both dishes arrived with the same slice of undercooked squash. While flavorful in theory, the squash’s firm texture left parts of it inedible. It was a minor misstep but noticeable given the otherwise refined execution of the plates.
Service throughout the evening was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable—servers appeared at just the right moments, kept our glasses filled, and were eager to answer any questions. The romantic atmosphere, panoramic views, and the warm glow from the interior’s rustic décor all contributed to a memorable night.
Though portion sizes were on the modest side—particularly for the price—the overall experience of dining at the Flying V Bar & Grill remains elevated by the quality of the cuisine, the captivating setting, and the attentive service. After 13 years away, I’m delighted to report that Flying V continues to shine as one of Tucson’s most distinctive and enjoyable dining venues.

“Always a great place to hang out with a few friends or even by yourself! Nice chill atmosphere with movies to watch while you drink or browse the movie section for something to go. Food trucks are plenty when they have them scheduled and food to go when they do not. Come here for games, movies, and drinks!“

“Such a beautiful space to listen and enjoy fine music. Amy subtitles Exo Bar, aka El Crisol, 'the listening room' and, indeed, it's the music that speaks and it speaks volumes. I'm thankful that some of my most memorable nights in Tucson have been spent there.“

“We love going here! You can have a drink there or choose from a huge selection of individual drinks to go. They sometimes have live music and best of all, they allow dogs! 🥰 you’ll usually see the same people that work there which is nice. They seem like a super cool community. There’s a pizza place next door, where we first order then find a comfy place outside the shop shop. Sometimes it’s hard to find parking but there’s always room on the street.“

“We tried Bashful Bandit for the first time today, it was delicious. I also really appreciated the customer service, the employees were very patient with our kids and helped them pick out a meat they would like (they both thought it was tasty and are picky eaters!)“

“This bar is killer and Tuesday night karaoke with Jarrell is my whole religion right now. I keep telling the bar staff, so I’m telling the public - LOUIE’S KARAOKE IS THE BEST KARAOKE IN THE WORLD, and I was a host for 10 years. If you come because of my review, say hi! I’ll be there every Tuesday until machines take over the world, and then some. Thank you!!“
“Love this place! Divinely lit at night.Tasty thirst-quenching craft beer, and unique refreshing nonalcoholic options too. Can’t wait to get back there and try the new offerings!“

“Our 10/10 experience was thanks to Brody. Even though it was a super busy night, he managed to hold down the fort and create an experience like no other. Truly grateful to have him guide us (a group newbies) on all the offerings available at the Short Rest Tavern. Thank you Brody!“

“went here on a random Friday night. A neighborhood bar in a residential neighborhood, the lazy v is pretty basic: bottled beer, mixed drinks pool tables and a jukebox playing a pretty wide variety. mostly locals form the clientele, and they are ranging from construction workers and truckers to whoever happens to stumble in like myself
the bartender, Monte, was super cool and even bummed me a cigarette because I had forgot mine.
if you're looking for a chill place to have a beer, I would recommend it. can't speak to any food options because I didn't see any, the beer selection was pretty basic: not much foreign or craft.
Parking: gigantic dirt lot outside. no issues finding parking on a Friday night“
“I almost gave Casa 4 stars as it is so much smaller than it used to be and I loved it when I was younger. Then I remembered there are no other video rental places that I am aware of that exist in Arizona. The video rental business as we know is no longer hopping but they still stay open and stay true to providing the old school video store experience. There are movies playing while you walk through which I love. We were able to find some more obscure titles here to rent and you can also buy cheap movies. Movies that are not new releases are only $4.50 for 14 days, that is generally less than it is to rent it via steaming and better quality. They also have a bar and have food trucks certain days. Highly recommend.“

“The Tap Room at the historic Congress Hotel is a true Tucson treasure! Tucked inside a building full of character and history, this cozy bar hits all the right notes—from atmosphere to drinks to music.
John, the bartender, is absolutely top-notch. His Old Fashioned is one of the best I’ve had—expertly crafted, smooth, and perfectly balanced. You can tell he knows his way around a bar and genuinely cares about creating a great experience for every guest. Friendly, professional, and a true craftsman behind the bar.
The music selection was fantastic—cool, laid-back, and perfectly matched to the classic feel of the space. It’s the kind of spot where you can unwind, have a great conversation, and enjoy a drink made with real skill.
Whether you’re visiting Tucson or a local looking for a great bar with charm and quality, don’t miss the Tap Room. Ask for John and treat yourself to a real Old Fashioned—you’ll be glad you did!“

“I had never visited John Henry’s, and I found it quite charming. They have an excellent choice of drinks, and the bartender was very friendly & knowledgeable. I’ll be back, John Henry’s! Also, you need an eye-catching sign that says “John Henry’s” instead of one that simply states “bar.”“

“Very cool bar in 4th avenue in downtown Tucson. I stopped by in a Thursday (karaoke night apparently) and had some tots and a “cherry limeade”. Staff was friendly and helpful and the food and drinks were top notch. This whole area of downtown is loaded with cool bars and shops but this place stood out to me on my visit.“

“Service is always on point here. Amazing staff. We do lunch often and we did iur aniversary brunch and also have gone to late night. All shifts were the same grade A service! Side note, be careful when you order tequila, at lunch ordered margs,
like she should our waitress offered tequilla options other than house... we were in the vibe of the atmosphere and chose one of the nes she gave, and our four margaritas came out to $80. Not her fault, she was doing her job, and wont lie, the margaritas were so good. But even after getting that bill we were smiling and satisfied with yet another great time at Tabu.
Food is good. Spicy zmargarita the best and its just an atmosphere that isnt anywhere else in Tucson.“
