Food is gross 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Great experience - the old, bad reviews are from before change in management. We had great meals - surprisingly fancy for a pub (a grapefruit roasted feta salad with coffee vinagrette). Service was friendly and frequent - they warned us a 20-person table just put their kitchen order in so our food would probably take a while, and then it was surprisingly fast anyway. Definitely recommend.

Doors opened like they were the golden gates, waitress was wonderful , beautiful veiw overlooking the harbor. The food was next level. The cheese sticks and nacho bowl is all I need for a last meal, the rest of my group had the big Jay burger , fried feta - fruit salad and halibut fish and tots they say the same. Food came out fast and fresh. 100% recommend 100% will make the trip just to have a meal. Thanks Stellers jay

I had the ā€˜Jay’ burger and salad which came with a maple flavoured dressing, both of which were delicious. Staff was friendly, the service was good, cost was reasonable and the view was spectacular! I would recommend.

Excellent food! Atmosphere and staff are amazing and very humanitarian in nature for a pub doing regular fundraisers for local organizations and supporting local musicians! Never heard of a pub to be so selfless!

The Steller’s Jay Pub opened about a month ago to moderate local excitement. It takes over the space previously occupied by Ocean View Pub, and Howler’s before that. Prior to the Steller’s Jay grand opening, some renovation work was apparently done; however, I didn’t observe a significant difference from that of its predecessor. It still very much carries the Ocean View Pub vibe; that is, it is reflective of a local tavern. The menu at Steller’s Jay appears to be a slight upgrade from that of Ocean View. Yes, they carry all the typical pub fare – burgers, wings, fish & chips – but they also have some unique offerings like the pork schnitzel and some rather intriguing salads. They also offer a monthly ā€œfeatureā€ menu, which helps to keep the offerings fresh. I admit some curiosity about the food. Steller’s Jay’s predecessor was once a foodie powerhouse in this community, but they fizzled out with a whimper in their last year of operation. Would Steller’s Jay pick up the pieces and reinvigorate this space? Well, the food is decent overall; however, the quality appears to be very ā€œhit and miss.ā€ I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the chicken wing flavours I’ve tried (rhubbq, buffalo, and black death). In each instance, the flavours have been pronounced without totally taking over the natural flavours of the chicken; and the chicken itself has been very moist. My favourite wing, thus far, has been the ā€œblack deathā€ because it offers a good hit of heat + some nice hints of citrus. Similarly, my Mumbo Chicken Sandwich, which features two strips tossed in mumbo sauce, radish, panzer slaw, cilantro, and spicy mayo, was quite delicious and beautifully plated; however, it was kind of a pain to pick up and eat – a very messy but nice looking sandwich. I’ve always maintained that any good pub can – and should – do a decent fish & chips since it’s a staple of this type of establishment. In this respect, I ordered the rockfish w/ Caesar salad. The fish certainly looked good on the outside, but it was inconsistent. The larger of the two pieces wasn’t cooked properly – the batter was still gummy and undercooked. The smaller piece of fish, on the other hand, was nicely done. The accompanying Caesar salad was nothing special. And speaking of nothing special: The Prawn Salad sounded great on paper (apricot and rhubarb puree, crostini, radish, mandarin oranges, kelp, vinaigrette), but fell flat in person. It was basically a pile of plain lettuce, four small prawns, thinly sliced and rolled cucumber, and a few canned mandarin orange segments. The various purees were either scantly smeared on the plate or in a tiny cup. Indeed, this was a case of exciting on paper but boring in real life. Like the food, service is also hit and miss. The first time I patronized Steller’s Jay, I was attended to promptly. The second time, service was good, but I did wait about 15 minutes to pay my bill. During my last visit, I must’ve been invisible. After being seated, I waited over 25 minutes before anyone came by to take my order. I’d also heard other customers complaining about lack of service. If nothing else, I do hope this new pub improves its customer service. FOOD: 3/5 SERVICE: 3/5 ATMOSPHERE: 3/5 VALUE: 3/5 RECOMMENDATION: Well, Steller’s Jay is the only pub in town. The food is decent (depending on what you order), but the service is definitely hit & miss. If you’re too lazy to travel for pub fare, this place will do; otherwise, I’d recommend driving the 40 or so minutes to the Axe and Anchor in Port Clements.
