“Red is special and so are its stewards, like Gord LePage. I have to admit, I was skeptical that we would be wasting our time with a ski host as we had already skied all the runs that our group could handle over the first few days of our stay and didn’t think there was anything a host could add, but boy was I wrong. I woke up with ski ski ski on my mind and just wanted to hit it. So after my friends convinced me to join them with the host one of our organizers setup, I reluctantly joined the chat inside with our host for the morning. Enter Gord LePage. Snow host, historian, lifetime ski enthusiast, and Rossland local for most of his 70+ years on earth. A lifelong adventurer and lover of the great outdoors in this idyllic little paradise. What we gained by having Gord as our guide wasn’t on any trail map at all and truly made our 4 day escape to Red take on a much deeper meaning. He’s worked in a number of capacities at the mountain and seems to have had a hand in many of the advancements at the mountain over time especially through his work with the ski patrol. Perhaps most unique was learning about the history of the resort and the key locals like Flying Phil and the brethren of the Klister Club lodge, or the tale of the judge’s and Grey Mountain warming huts. Red is home to some pretty amazing and passionate people who all care deeply about the heritage of both Rossland and its jewel Red Mountain that peaks through what we learned is called the Kootenay Sea (referring to the sea of clouds that blanket the valley below like a giant duvet sheltering them from the cold of winter high above). To have legend and gifted storyteller like Gord was like striking gold on our trip and truly made our memories of Red ones that will last and undoubtedly bring us back again. As for skiing with Gord, the man can still rip up the slopes too. Thank you Gord for truly adding a magical touch to our Red Mountain experience. See you again soon.
