We came during happy hour today and felt very disappointed by our visit here. Firstly, the service was non-existent, almost to the point where we were left questioning if they even wanted our business, or were trying to rush us out. From having to flag someone down for every little thing to being presented with the bill and having the server walk away after leaving us with the machine (to come collect it later) and without a polite word said in the exchange was at best weird, and at worst, downright rude.

Beside the service, we seemed to also have been met with food shortages. First, they were out of the happy hour oysters (not sure how frequently this happens here), so we agreed to get the more premium oysters at $2.5 a piece — after the first 6 oysters, when we asked for another round, we were informed that they were out of those as well. If the kitchen had informed us that they were running short, we would have ordered more to begin with, and it was strange how they ran out in the 15 min since our first order. One of the other dishes that we ordered was the avocado salmon roll but there was hardly any avocado in them — the roles were largely a bunch of rice.

So the combination of non-existent service, with not honoring of happy hour pricing and running out of menu items, along with substandard sushi rolls made this place among the top of our “never again” list.

Edit - the response to my review is disingenuous. Suggesting that the oysters were discounted when they weren't is untruthful. And no, the rolls didn't have much salmon either - was mostly rice...

Amazing sushi place and great tasting food. It brings back traditional sushi restaurants in Japan

Rarely in this neighbourhood, but dined at Kamei on Broadway as part of a group lunch. Had the Unagi & Sashimi (lunch menu combo for $19.95). Good lunch portion. The tempura came fresh and hot, and there were 5 slices of sashimi. The unagi was marinated well! One diner in our group had their order come out much later than their partner, despite ordering at the same time (it came out shortly after they inquired, so we wondered if the order didn't get put through).

Despite that, we found their combos to be a fair, average price, and you do get a variety of items. Our teapot was topped up, when asked. They have paid street parking and an underground parkade. Located a block over from the busy West Broadway and Cambie corrider, but Kamei is set inside a plaza, so a bit removed from the bustle. Overall, we had a good lunch here and would recommend!

Extremely overpriced for average sushi with tiny portion sizes. Ordered a spider roll which was $18 for 4 thin pieces. Spicy tuna crisp had about one tablespoon of tuna and a pinch of avocado, and wasn’t spicy. Very disappointed.

The food here is pretty good.
The only downside is the terrible service — the staff are extremely slow.

A blonde girl brought out some dishes but told us she wasn’t serving our table and would get someone else to help. However, 15 minutes passed and no one came, so we had to ask the staff ourselves.

Then, a waiter in a white shirt finally came to take our order, but he didn’t double-check what we ordered, which resulted in one dish being missed.

Meanwhile, food was being served quickly to other tables around us, but ours had to wait for over 30 minutes with nothing coming out.

The manager was very friendly — after we complained, he gave us a 10% discount and kindly offered free dessert. Unfortunately, by then our mood was already ruined and we didn’t feel like having dessert anymore.

it's okay, and i don't feel scammed, but i won't be back

wanted the happy hour oysters but they weren't in stock so only got the magic chirashi set

let's just go over the different fish:

red prawn and scallop: standard quality, it isn't impressive but nothing disappointing either

sea urchin: bitter and badly cleaned (with a shell piece). they're not unfresh but it's simply a quality difference, my best guess would be chilean sea urchin but it could also be low grade japanese

salmon roe: on the small side, wouldn't be surprised if it was from chum salmon but pretty standard anyway

bluefin tuna: lean meat (akami) is on the bloody side, this is a positive for me but could be a negative for others

chutoro: flavor is a little washed out (probably from defrosting) but the fat content and texture are pretty solid

sea bream: almost zero flavor, the skin seemed to have been torched to bring it out but if they go back to being stored after it just makes the skin bitter

yellowtail: above average, not very bloody compared to most pieces

eel: not the usual premade chinese frozen one, very surprisingly good

crab: extremely watery and tasteless, almost stinky, this is better left uneaten, it does appear to be actual japanese snow crab but i would have preferred native north american snow crab to this always, a far cry from good quality japanese snow crab

two types of salmon: i didn't eat these but my partner said they were good

overall the value is acceptable and there are definitely some standouts, if you can accept it as a 6 bowl set rather than a 7 bowl set i think it's alright

also they use yamasa soy sauce which has bitter notes, i personally don't prefer this

I was looking for a late night snack and found this Japanese Restaurant tucked away in the corner of a plaza on Broadway. I ordered a specialty roll which was delicious and had a great few of the mountains as the sun was setting.
