The Food Villain

We booked a table for our anniversary and we did enjoy our food there. Our menu consisted of a series of smaller plates, almost 7-8 in total if we count the pre-amuse amuse, the actual amuse and the post-desert, i.e. the mignardises (which I really enjoyed, especially the truffle-chocolate).Dishes were balanced and complex flavor-wise. I would have preferred the bread from the bread service to be a bit less sweet from that glaze and a bit more fluffy, it was quite dense.Since this is my 24th Michelin Star restaurant, I have to say that portion-wise, the entire meal in total was on the barely-enough-food side. I have rarely had this experience with restaurants of this caliber and I usually make fun of people who say that in fine dining portions are small, because for most degustation menus, you rarely leave a place hungry.Unfortunately, I left St. Laurence almost hungry. My delicious caramelized onion tart was barely a bite, my amazing pasta dish was barely two bites and my duck breast main had literally two tiny pieces of duck. Even for the bread service I was never asked if I want more than a tiny bun that was supposed to serve two.To compare French cuisine with French cuisine, at Le Bernardin, a three-star restaurant in the heart of NYC, the bread service is impeccable, the bread is of a higher quality all together, and you can have as much as you want. If you visit for lunch you get probably 3 times more food than St Laurence, for the same amount of money approx. So, while I enjoyed the flavors and the service was good, I really did leave the restaurant almost hungry, and while my palate was highly entertained I felt that the restaurant could afford to serve slightly bigger portions. In other words, I felt a bit cheated, as if I should be satisfied with less food because (insert a make-believe explanation here)Btw, we did add extras to our menu and still the food wasn't enough. Also, for a French restaurant the wine list is just unacceptable. Very few choices really. It will take me a while to visit for those reasons.

the location in the midst of the Vancouver homeless crisis, and also the tiny cramped dining space, are shocking

(menu from March 2024) Good, but less incredible than in other restaurants of the same level. They forgot to introduce me to the last service, I realized this when reading the menu shared as a souvenir after departure. Alcohol-food pairings are good, but the salt/sugar level of the dishes needs to be refined and a little more lightness would be welcome during the meal.

I’ve been meaning to try this place for a while and I’m glad I finally did. Bringing in Quebec-style cooking to the west coast in a wonderful marriage of flavours is what you can expect here.Definitely get the pork rinds as the add on, they’re tasty and addictive!Service was attentive and fantastic. Food came at a decent pace, depending on your dining style.Overall, very impressed with the food. Make sure you make a reservation ahead of time!Parking: The free spots are in the not great areas, the paid spots are on the main roads. Pay for the parking to be safe and not have to walk to your car at night after.

Went there twice. Dec 22 and Dec 23. As a French person, I fully endorse their menu. Among the 10 or so dishes of the tasting menu, all of them hit the right notes. If you have never had French haute gastronomie, or you're missing that, it's the best I've found in GVAThe portiy size is ok but a tad more wouldn't hurt. You're not going to walk out starving but you better not make it the only meal of your day either, which is fine kinda.I think the pricing went haywire though. It literally doubled up in the span of 1 year. I know there's inflation but surely the Michelin star got a detrimental effect to the value us customers get. I still think it's a fantastic place, and probably a staple in the Vancouver food scene if you want to celebrate an anniversary or something like that... That is: when money becomes a secondary concern. The atmosphere and service are both fantastic so there's that.In short, if you're price conscious, you will probably want to consider other venues. If you want the absolute best French food/service/atmosphere without regard for the price then by all means go there.

What a memorable, delicious, and exquisite meal. We did the fixed menu with add ons and the pairings. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. To enjoy a delicious meal with friends with zero decision making and incredible service is PRICELESS. We were 3 friends reconnecting over food and the experience was perfection. Chris and his team took incredible care of us. We had a few sensitive tummies for beverages so 2/3 of the pairings needed augmentation and they were able to accommodate and exceed expectations. We will 100% be back. What a delightful evening.

A reasonable experience. I feel that perhaps it’s more about hype than actual performance food-wise here.I would consider most of the courses more as amuse-Bouches. I didn’t find value in the tasting menu for the price pointI did enjoy the wine pairing. It was decent. The truth is that we left disappointed.

Favourite restaurant in the city, by far. Been about a dozen times now and each time is a great experience. Can't wait for my next visit and can't recommend enough.

February tasting menu. Every thing was very maple syrup forward, many courses too sweet. Told pretentiously ‘We. Do. Not. Have. Vodka’ as if it was some sort of dirty spirit unfitting for a martini , only ‘botanical gin’. As if fine vodka is not made in both Quebec and France. I will not rush back.

I have been meaning to go for 8 months - pleased that they were able to move around my reservation - very appreciated. However! You need to pre-pay for dinner! And the pushed wine pairing - was never! Explained for price and was over 300 extra dollars just for two people! The worst was when presented and responded to the bill - well of course? !Very arrogant restaurant! There were bits that were good regarding food - but the blob of Boursin cheese for amuse bouche and the very gamey ! Lamb and the other deep fried item - were way too rich that one couldn’t eat and I have eaten a lot of French and Quebec food. It wasn’t the best French food in Vancouver as Le Crocodile is far superior. One server was lovely but another was way too rude and arrogant. The delivery of the 300 plus bill for wine pairings was so so terrible that my Mom became quite upset and their response ruined any experience of the evening. - all they had to do was explain the extra plus 400 dollars prior to ordering ( wouldn’t have added !)The arrogance of the staff is coming out and the place won’t last with such an attitude.Go to Le Crocodile for good French food! And you won’t have to pay outrageous prices for wine pairing.
