We didn't stay at the hotel but we did eat at the restaurant. The food is absolutely so delicious, and Leah our server is 11/10. Fantastic service. Add the wonderful view and you really cannot go wrong.
Disappointed. Ordered the pepper steak and my wife ordered the mussels.
Mussels were cold. Concerning....
Steak was small, luke warm and cut into small strips. It would be ok on a salad. Pepper sauce watery and never came close to tasting like pepper.
Service was erratic.
View is nice, if you insist on a table with a view. Otherwise it's pointless.
I'd been meaning to pop in for a drink for ages as I've heard great things, it didn't disappoint. This would be a fantastic spot for some sundowners, or fresh seafood on a sunny day on the patio. I think the bar should be a seperate Google place, as the reviews here are mostly about rooms.
We didn’t stay at the hotel and can only recommend the lounge. This was a really cool throwback experience with exceptional service. We really liked the personal interaction and attention of the waiter. Great view of English bay and we loved the beer and calamari!
Such a pretty hotel. Rooms very clean. I do wish they had AC but still giving 5 stars.
We also ate at the restaurant twice. Great food. Mid prices.
Beautiful building sitting right on the beach. The rooms were spacious and clean. The front desk service was great with a bunch of knowledge about the area.
Highly recommend, just be aware there is no AC.
I stayed at the Sylvia Hotel in Room #608 for one night, checked in on July 5th, 2026. My details will be in the hotel system for reference.
When I arrived, I introduced myself and presented my driving licence for check-in. There was no welcome or greeting from the staff member, Ron, which felt out of place for a hotel. While I was going through my booking details, I asked him if he had a map of the area. He responded that he was busy and I would have to wait.
After completing payment with my credit card, I mentioned that I'd heard the former PM Trudeau had stayed at the hotel, just as casual conversation. Ron responded quite rudely, saying he did not need to answer that question. He then handed over the room keys without any further interaction.
I returned to the front desk about an hour later and asked for his name. He asked me why I wanted to know instead of answering. I asked again, and he repeated the same response. I told him directly that I hadn't liked his attitude — that he hadn't answered my earlier questions and now wouldn't even give me his name. He again questioned why I needed it, and I explained I wanted to leave an honest review about his behavior. Only then did he tell me his first name was Ron. When I asked for his full name, he refused to answer, and after I asked a second time, he simply walked away without a response.
Overall, this was one of the least welcoming check-in experiences I've had. No greeting, unhelpful responses to simple requests, and a staff member who was reluctant to even identify himself when asked directly. I hope hotel management addresses this with him.
Came for the view, left talking about the calamari. Easily some of the best calamari I’ve had, perfectly cooked and not greasy. Pair that with an incredible waterfront view, and it’s hard to beat. Sometimes a great view makes the food seem better, but in this case, the calamari actually lived up to it. I’ll definitely be back.
Absolutely charming experience. We had one of the corner suites and it was very well equipped. Super clean, little kitchenette, and the view was unsurpassed. Please keep in mind that it is a historic hotel, so the space was not as large as more modern rooms but beautifully kept. Loved dining in the restaurant both inside and outside on the patio. The food was excellent and the service was very attentive. Definitely a relaxing and memorable stay in a very unique historical building.
The Sylvia Hotel has a warm, classic atmosphere that's difficult to find in modern hotels. I enjoyed the comfortable room, friendly staff, and the convenience of being just steps from the beach. Walking along the waterfront each morning was definitely a highlight of the trip. It loses one star because some areas could benefit from updates, but I'd happily stay here again.

My daughter and I took out two special cherished friends to celebrate their May birthdays and bon voyage as one of them is moving to Powell River.
We decided on the Sylvia because we love it there. The ambience, decor and view is spectacular as is the service and the food. We were so well taken care of. We had the perfect window table and the best crème brûlée complete with a candle and Staff joining to sing happy birthday.
We actually closed out the Sylvia!! It was perfect.
The food at this restaurant under the new chef has been an incredible change and I highly encourage everyone to try the new menu items, especially the steak and pastas. Don’t skip on the app appetisers there’s lots of great options, especially the Hummagaoush! Every dish comes out well plated and always with the beautiful piece of garnish so you can tell there’s lots of thought and care put into each dish that’s coming out. The dessert menu is also incredible with something for everyone but my personal favourite is the crème brûlée , as it’s a classic but the Sylvia does it right. I brought my grandmother here for Christmas dinner as well and it was one of the most memorable experiences I’ll have with her so I will always cherish every visit and every meal I have at Sylvia.
For this hotel, you are paying for one thing: location. Listed at $380 for a standard room on Hotels.com in April 2026. The room was basic and dated, well kept and clean. Front desk staff were lovely. I could hear people talking in adjacent rooms.
Exceptional hotel in the heart of the city. We walked everywhere.
Super location, delicious food and excellent serve in the restaurant/lounge ! Thank you!
