I highly recommend the lunch set. It changes everyday, but our meal came with braised pork and egg, matcha soba, tamagoyaki, salad, and soup. It comes with one onigiri at standard price. The braised pork was okay but the matcha soba was my favorite.By themselves, the onigiri are a good size, though one isn’t fully filling. We got the chicken karaage, grilled unagi and egg yolk, and salmon and ikura. Each of them are filled very generously, though the unagi could use more sauce. The Takenaka soda is comprised of butterfly pea earl grey tea and calpico. I wouldn’t call it a soda, more like a virgin cocktail. It’s not super sweet and has an eccentric taste.

Came here for lunch. I had a great suggestion from a friend. The lunch sets are the key. Absolutely delicious and fresh. I think I’m hooked. This place does get busy so plan accordingly.I left smiling with a full belly.

Authentic Japanese lunch!!!Takenaka is my new favourite place for lunch! The miso soup has "free refills" and it is so flavourful!! It has fresh daikon and pea shoots. I ordered the set lunch menu for $22 (see photo) and it was just the right amount (I did not finish it all but I did have 2 bowls of miso- did I mention how irresistible it was?). Another reviewer commented on there being "too much rice" in the onigiri, however, I found it to be pretty authentic and yes, onigiri is filling. The service was excellent and courteous. The matcha latte was the perfect way to conclude this lunch. I do not have a sweet tooth and often matcha served elsewhere can be too sweet. Takenaka's matcha latte is just right. You need some sugar to balance the bitterness and they sweeten just the right amount, so you can still taste the delicious matcha. Check out this little gem in East Van (go early to avoid the lunch rush and to find parking). If you love Japanese food and ambience, you will love Takenaka!

I've only ordered from their food truck previously for their chirashi dish so this is our first time at their cafe. They had a dinner set menu for $29 that came with a little bit of everything. I chose their curry instead and thoroughly enjoyed it. Typical Japanese curry but with a slight amount of heat so it was very delicious. My partner had the set menu and loved everything in the set.Parking is ample on the street. Recommend to make reservation on weekends, gets pretty busy.I would definitely recommend trying it out if you enjoyed the food at the food truck!

What a pleasant experience in food, the place is kind of small but they ultimately use the space well. It doesn't feel crowded and cramped and while there will be a line up tables tend to free up. The food here is very good and balances the ingredients in the food so none of them over power each other. The service is wonderful and it pays at the counter and they will serve the food to your table kinda of place. I hope they expand to another sit down restaurant. The price is reasonable for the quality and proportions. Will come again!

Overall, I loved this place. First time trying it, only a 15 minute wait! Their food was delicious!! I love how you paid for your food and service first and then once we finished we didn't have to wait for a bill or anything. This system reminded me of Australia and Japan!
