Tojo's Restaurant is a must-visit for seafood lovers, renowned for its legendary status in the culinary scene, both locally and globally. The food is consistently amazing, with hand rolls being a standout, particularly the scallop one. The nigiri is generous and delicious, while the spicy tuna roll is enjoyable and quite filling. Customers praise the incredibly fresh, never-frozen sashimi, each piece a testament to quality and craftsmanship. The Sake flight is a superb choice, with the wasabi so good that it doesn't need to be mixed with soy sauce.
The service is exceptional, with knowledgeable and helpful staff who are hospitable and eager to chat during the meal. Diners have noted the attentive staff who go the extra mile, making the overall experience excellent. The atmosphere can be a bit quiet, but the beautiful environment and the excellent, delicious food make it perfect for special occasions. Some diners have noted surprises like stray fish bones, but this does not detract from the quality.
Chef Hidekazu Tojo has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his culinary career and is respected as a Master Chef. He was the first to introduce Omakase to Vancouver’s culinary scene and created the famous “Inside out” Tojo Roll, known as the “California Roll.” Chef Tojo continues to impress with dishes like the Tojo Roll, Golden Roll, and Sake Negroni. The Golden Roll, featuring unique egg crepe instead of seaweed, is a particular favorite. The menu, while pricey, offers an unforgettable dining experience, showcasing modern dishes rooted in Japanese fine dining traditions with a distinct Pacific Northwest perspective, using the finest seasonal, local, and organic ingredients.
Recent reviews highlight the Omakase seasonal menu for being sublime, featuring sablefish and sushi, and the special brew sake is highly appreciated. Overall, visitors look forward to future dining experiences at Tojo's, reaffirming its reputation as a top Japanese restaurant, where the attention to detail, like partially ground sesame seeds on the Tojo Roll, shows the restaurant's commitment to quality.
