Great service. Food was delicious, creative and beautifully presented except for the beef dish. It was all brown food including two blobs of brown mushroom purée (guess what that looked like) and brown fried potatoes). It was really delicious once you got past the visuals. A little garnish with some colour would have gone a long way. Had the wine pairing after assurances from the waiter that the Chardonnays served with 2 courses were mildly oaked. No so. The Mission Hill Chardonnay...
We are local to Victoria and the restaurant, have been many times and have NEVER been disappointed. The creativity, the care with which the menu is developed, the TASTE of each dish, the portion size (small, but not tiny, plenty of food to fill most diners comfortably) make The Ugly Duckling a favourite for modern West Coast cuisine. The chef's talent and choice of fresh, local, often little-known elements in the dishes makes each meal an adventure...without the dishes ever...
