Sushi Kisen continues to punch well above its weight and it is 1/3 the price for the same quality as some of the now outrageously expensive sushi places in LA.For about $120, our omakase today included about 10 courses and 2 additional pieces we selected at the end. The quality of the nigiri is self-evident, particularly with the chutoro and the Nemuro uni. Another particular favorite was shiro-ebi. The chef confirmed that it is from Toyama. It should be mentioned that some pieces are ever so slightly on the saltier side (I confirmed that they do season with a drop of salt on some pieces), which I ended up liking but it might be a surprise to some. Extra points for the shari, which was flavorful on its own without taking away from the fish. I also highly recommend asking the chef if they have any seasonal items. We were very pleasantly surprised by our tsuika orders. When I do not have the time to enjoy an omakase at the bar, I would recommend their chirashi bowls.

All I'm going to say is this place is authentic. You'll know when you arrive. Even the menu had cultural etiquette list might be useful to know for some who are new to sushi or to Japanese cuisine. Anyway, food was great. Their Edomae dinner set came with a different miso soup than regular ones, the variety of sushi on the plate was atypical. I know most sushi places try to cheap you out on these set menus - this place did not. Highly recommended.

We visited Sushi Kisen for dinner on a Friday night. The restaurant was spacious, and not quite full when we arrived around 6:30. We were fortunate to get a table without reservations because not long after we were seated all the tables were full or reserved. The sushi counter had seating available, but I believe there is a minimum order to sit there.I had heard good things about their omakase, but decided to try their regular menu. We ordered the Ny steak and sashimi combo and the premium chirashi bowl. The miso soup, kobashi and tsukemono (small appetizers that came with the meal) arrived first. There was an interesting small meat patty that turned out to be made of what I think is tuna. It had a very light teriyaki glaze and was served cold. I thought it was okay. I normally prefer cooked protein served warm or room temperature. I forgot to take a picture of the sashimi that came with the NY steak, but all the fish was high quality. I especially noticed the tuna. I'm not a big fan of tuna sashimi, but this was really good. The sashimi pieces were on the smaller side, almost bite sized. The premium chirashi had 12 quality pieces, also on the smaller side. I was expecting sweet shrimp, but it came with a piece of cooked shrimp. It did have giant clam, which I love and rarely see in a chirashi bowl. The chirashi had a lot of rice and that's what made it really filling. I thought it was unusual when the waitress asked if I wanted less rice in the chirashi, but after eating it I understood why. It was a lot. The rice to protein ratio was high. If I ever order this again I would choose less rice.We probably shouldn't have ordered steak at a sushi restaurant, but we didn't expect it to be as bad as it was. The NY steak was really dry and not easy to chew even with the soy based sauce that came with it. I definitely wouldn't order this again.Overall the service and quality of the sushi were good. I give this experience 3.5 stars, but rounded up to 4. I would like to come back and try their omakase.

We tried sushi Kisen for the omakase experience at the bar and loved it! Tried a few things I've never had before like orange clam and giant clam! Fish tasted really fresh and our chef was friendly and knowledgeable. Interior of the restaurant is really nice and there's a parking lot! Would love to go back to try their regular dinner menu items.

Although I was really not satisfied with my waitress' professionalism, I don't want to deny this sushi restaurant's endeavor because of this issue. This sushi restaurant has the best sushi rice "shari" blended with excellent proprietary vinegar I ever tasted in the US so far. They also process their topping "neta" very well as too.I wish they could be aware one of their waitress had professionalism issue because this can hurt their perception and ruin their effort.Overall, I still recommend this place.

Second time here for omakase. It was still as good, or even better than the first time. I think this is one of the best omakase in San Gabriel/ Arcadia area. It was a pleasant surprise that this delicious plate of uni was a part of our omakase.

The fifth time it went from bad to worse. The rice of Edomae sushi is pinched too loosely, and the fish on top is thicker and falls apart as soon as you pinch it, not to mention that it needs to be dipped in soy sauce. Maybe it’s better to eat with your hands.

It allowed for a more intimate and interactive dining experience. Sitting at the bar provided a front-row seat to the chefs' culinary prowess, and their friendly demeanor added a welcoming touch to the meal.Standout Pieces: Several pieces stood out and left a lasting impression.
