I find their coffee a bit bland for my taste. Idk what the hype is about. The lavender latte was just okay. Their lattes are ok. Nothing special really.

A new coffee spot in Downtown Berkeley. I love a lot of things about it. It's in a perfect location on the way to the BART station, they have lovely staff and they also serve a wonderful selection of chais that are much more akin to the chai you get in India. I'll be going here often!

Modern Coffee fourth location is located below the brand new center street parking garage across from bike station. I've heard from my Berkeley neighbor that MC was to debut somewhere in Berkeley we just don't know where yet. On this night I drove by looking for possible street parking. Decided not to chance it so parking at new garage was ideal. Walking out I saw manual stamp paper cup with MC logo ink on it through window. It was early and I had time. Walk in and discovered one side cafe and other side bike repair and sales. It was late and everything was put away just grease stained pastry boxes from earlier delivery visible. Menu don't seen to change from other location. They've soy or almond milk, but no oat. Hours are M-F 7:30 a.m to 3 p.m. Since I've been going to their Tribune Tower location for quite sometime I know I would get same experience here too. The only problem is they close at 3 and I get off at 5.

For such a small coffee stand, this place has so many drink options/customizations - in addition to all drinks being available iced, there is also a seasonal menu, alternative milk, and add-ons. You also save 10c if you bring your own cup, and I'm pretty sure they'll fill it up all the way if you pay for a small (that happened to me; I was charged for a small despite having an 18 oz cup). All the cups I've had here are fresh, hot, and quick. Deciding to try a seasonal drink during one visit, I was a little skeptical about the combination of lavender and chocolate in the lavender mocha. I decided to give it a shot anyway. I barely tasted the lavender, and would've preferred the cheaper and tastier normal mocha they offer. Overall, I love Modern Coffee's drinks, though going here often would really stack up against my wallet - +75c for alternative milks is a bit pricey (I'm lactose intolerant), and $2.50 for a regular 12oz black coffee is a bit crazy.

Modern Coffee cohabits a space with Bike Station @Center Street Garage, offerings: coffee, tea, chai, bagels, pastries brew: coffee (m. 2.50) -smooth light or medium roast brew, nice silkiness not strong enough. definitely needed dark roast today *maybe the rains, changing weather sapped my attention span today. drips: -quick, courteous, smiling service... -parking iffy with mucho construction ongoing in downtown berkeley.

If you're looking for a solid cup of brewed coffee, then this is your place. I stop at the Oakland location regularly and was so happy to see one opening in Berkeley. It's located in the bike garage on Center St and is a little hidden, but it's a great grab-and-go location with a small parklet outside. I've lived in Berkeley for a couple of years and have been disappointed that there really aren't any places to get a good cup of coffee in the Downtown area. This is good coffee. I've never had their espresso drinks, but my coworkers swear by their lattes and will go out of their way in Oakland to stop at Modern.

In the pilot episode of Twin Peaks, Agent Dale Cooper said something I could never understand, "I'm going to let you in on a little secret: every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it; don't wait for it; just let it happen. It could be a new shirt in a men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black, coffee." It wasn't until I started living and working full-time in Downtown Berkeley where I needed to find pleasure in something simple. For Dale and I, it's water, some beans, and a cup. Sometimes two cups. Modern Coffee was able to sprout up out of the new Bike Shop and Parking Garage to deliver a fresh take on that simplicity. Before it opened, I assumed that it would deliver stale coffee and a lack of atmosphere. Oh no no. My pretentiousness was spiked down by the cappuccino with toasty, sweet notes and topped with a tulip design. The excitement came not just from the well rounded cap but from finding that they will have a rotation of featured roasters ― making every visit unique. Hell. Maybe, I'll relapse my chai drinking habits because its on the menu. As a fair warning, there isn't a traditional lounge area in the shop; however, this location isn't assuming the identity of Philz, Blue Bottle, or even Starbucks. The setup revolves around ordering, catching up with the baristas, and then maybe sitting in the parklet out front. I want a coffee run that can turn any average day into a good day; this is the place that can do it.
