Reflecting back to 1995, I had arrived in the USA to do a horse trek on the John Muir wilderness trail and It was the night before we were leaving and with friends in Bishop, we had dinner and drinks at Rusty's Saloon. It was my first experience with an American western style saloon, and I loved it. the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere I fondly remember. In Australia, I was a professional horse trekker taking people from all parts of the world on outback horse treks and "Pub Crawls on horseback, and it was Americans on my ride who told me about Bishop, Rusty's, and the John Muir wilderness treks. If interested I can send the complete story from my memoirs published in 2017 by Book Venture USA

We drove almost 6 hours to get here from Nevada, through spectacular scenery with equally spectacular temperatures, rising well above 100 degrees the whole way. We were more than ready to hit the first bar we could find in Bishop. The coin-toss about which way to walk downtown landed us here at Rusty's, where we didn't exactly fit in with the folks sitting around the bar, but they were tolerant sorts who winked and nodded to greet us. So we plunked ourselves down and ordered some good cold local beer on tap to cool off and start to think about dinner. Service was fast and friendly, and we chatted with the server about the town and its "story" including some hard times recently, due to the pandemic. A fair number of empty storefronts attest to this. But, as always, folks go about their daily lives We hadn't realized that the food part of the saloon is independently run, but once we were made aware of this, we strolled over to the concession window and ordered up what turned out to be very large, very tender and juicy cheeseburgers, made on-the-spot and enclosed in what seemed to be fresh-made buns. These burgers were mouthwatering and very satisfying, especially with the ice cold beer and the simple but appealing look and feel of the place. The hand-cut fries and crispy onion rings were delicious, too, and we made short work of everything, washing it all down with some more brew, our lodging being located just a short walk away. We drive cross country regularly to visit family in Southern California, and now that we know we can get there easily through the wide open spaces all around here, rather than getting stuck on an interstate, we will be sure to stop at Rusty's on our next trip west. Recommended.

The best bar food you can have with so many choices to choose from. There's a delicious twist to every item.

A dive describes this exactly. Zero parking and when you have to park your brand new vehicle in a dark alley because the "cops may show up" I will pass.

We didn't eat here. The bartender (Linda) was awesome. Very friendly, great service and good advice from locals. A comfortable cowboy bar, we had a great time.

The place is indeed an old fashioned saloon, with billiards and everything. The Mexican food was pretty good (i had carne asada, and cleaned up the whole plate, except for 1/2 of the super hot jalapeno ??). The beer is good, and the staff is friendly.

This is a typical "neighborhood" bar that caters to locals and visitors alike. The beer is cold and the bar employees are friendly. They serve a variety of beers including PBR which is a must have, at least once. Buy a t-shirt for yourself and one for a friend.
