My family has lived in El Segundo for nearly 30 years, and Hana Haru has long been one of our go-to spots for sushi. Its convenient location and consistently fresh offerings—especially favorites like the salmon handrolls, David’s Roll, and Popcorn Roll—made it a staple for birthdays and celebrations.
In recent years, due to our busy schedules, we began ordering takeout rather than dining in. Unfortunately, we’ve found that the quality of the food, particularly the sushi, doesn't always match the dine-in experience. While occasional mistakes are understandable at any restaurant, what has truly disheartened us is how management handles customer complaints.
One ongoing issue is the restaurant’s failure to update their online menu to reflect current offerings. This has led to multiple ordering mishaps. More concerning, however, is the pattern of poor customer service and dismissive—even hostile—responses from management, especially when we’ve pointed out errors in our orders.
A recurring problem has involved our request for soy paper instead of seaweed on certain rolls, which incurs an extra charge of $2 per roll. Despite clearly specifying this request multiple times, our orders have often arrived incorrectly. Rather than acknowledging the mistake and correcting it, the response has frequently been defensive and rude—most notably from a manager named Jonathan. What should have been simple fixes turned into upsetting, uncomfortable exchanges.
It's incredibly disappointing that after so many years of loyalty to Hana Haru, we've felt unwelcome and even blamed for their oversights. And despite not receiving what we paid for, the restaurant still charged us the full amount without any effort to make it right.
After several frustrating experiences, we’ve decided to take our business elsewhere. We now enjoy our sushi at other local spots like Kaya, where the food is excellent and the customer service respectful and professional.
We truly wish things were different. But for now, we can no longer recommend Hana Haru.

Stopped by to pick up some to-go order. Hostess was completely inattentive. Stood around for about 5 minutes before one of the chefs took my order. A couple came after me and was ignored also. Overall food was ok. Service very disappointing. Chefs were very polite.

Left really annoyed I paid $45. The sushi was simply not good. The roll was mid and the nigiri was terrible (both in flavor and texture). Fish did not taste fresh at all and rice was sub par.
Overpriced

I recently visited this sushi bar, and I was blown away by the experience. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed without feeling rushed. The sushi was some of the best I've ever had—exceptionally fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The ambiance was stylish and calming, with just the right balance of energy to make it a lively yet relaxing place to dine. Definitely a top-tier sushi spot—highly recommend!

This place feels, smells and looks like this soap in their restroom. Something you don't want to touch...
Came here with my wife and two kids, the table was sticky, the place where we set smelled like pee.
Sushi was ok, but lady who serviced us didn't bring soy souse and I had to ask someone else for it.
When I paid for the order another lady brought the bill, but didn't bring the credit card back. With all the hustle I forgot about the credit card and only found that I left it next day.
When I returned back they gave me the credit card without any apologies. Would avoid this place under any circumstances.
Went to get some sushi and found this place in downtown El Segundo. Ok sushi! A little high on their specialty rolls. Nothing that I would go back for but pretty good.

? Worst sushi of my life.
Just go down the street (1 minute walk) to Kagura instead.
Soy sauce was expired by 1 year. When they brought a new bottle, it was also expired by 1 year and smelled like alcohol. Rice was low quality. Rolls fell apart. Very little avocado in my avocado cucumber roll.
Miso soup was not drinkable. Way way way too salty.
And look at the picture of what I got when I ordered a tofu avocado roll... ?
Staff was nice. ??
