Had heard good things, but I was not impressed. $22 for a poke bowl with very little in it, onion rings without any flavor - didn't taste like onion, just fried nothing. You order at a window so feels kind of like fastfood. Lots of seating indoors and out. For the price, I'd go somewhere else.

Fresh fish abound and you can taste it. What makes this market stand out is the all the custom combinations you can get your food, from sides to fish prep. Best brings i have had in while!

Such a wide variety of fish and decent beer. Reasonable prices. Deliciously prepared and a good kids menu for kids that shy away from Fish.

I love this place and style of restaurant. I got red snapper on a salad and it hit the spot. I shared onion rings as well. Very good!
The fish shop stew is outstanding! Highly recommended.
I did not like the fish shop chowder. All I tasted was flour from the roux.
Overall, it’s a fantastic place.

The fish you ordered here may not be the fish you’re eating. The food was good but honestly service was kinda bizarre. So I went up and ordered (3) tacos and they were Red Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and Halibut. All were with lemon butter, sauce on the side, and flour tortillas. All ordered Togo so they pack them up in their own boxes with labels on each box. Okay perfect. I pay and wait for my order and when my order gets there I check the receipt and it says I ordered two red snapper and one Halibut. This was wrong and I think the lady at the register misheard me since I ordered a Mahi Mahi. No big deal so I found the manager and I explain the situation and brought him one of the two red snappers that I randomly picked and asked if it could be switched for the Mahi Mahi. I even brought the receipt that said two red snappers. He goes back to the kitchen and then comes back and says that what was in the box labeled red snapper was actually Mahi Mahi. So now I am confused. Did he dig through my food? Was the other red snapper taco actually Mahi Mahi too? Did he even check? I’m not convinced what I ate was Mahi Mahi. It was still good, but very bizarre. So if you don’t know your fish super well odds are you are getting the fish you ordered when you go here.

The fish shop in Encinitas delivered a consistently impressive meal from start to finish. The red snapper set the tone—lightly crisp on the outside, tender and flaky inside, and seasoned in a way that let the natural flavor of the fish come through. It tasted genuinely fresh, the kind of freshness you only get when seafood hasn’t been sitting around.
The poke bowl kept that same standard. The fish had a clean, buttery texture, and the bowl leaned more on quality ingredients than heavy sauces. Everything tasted balanced: warm rice with the right texture, toppings that added crunch and brightness, and fish that actually tasted like the star of the dish.
The yellowtail burrito ended up being the sleeper hit. The yellowtail was rich and tender, and the warm tortilla wrapped everything together without getting soggy or heavy. Every bite stayed balanced, and it had that satisfying warm‑meets‑fresh contrast that makes you want to order it again immediately.
The lobster taco was the indulgent highlight—sweet, perfectly cooked lobster with just enough seasoning to enhance it without overpowering it. The texture was spot‑on: tender, not rubbery, and paired with toppings that added freshness instead of clutter. It felt like a treat without being overly heavy.
Overall, the place nails what a coastal seafood spot should be: fresh fish, simple prep, and flavors that speak for themselves.

The food actually tasted really good!!! Especially the coleslaw, which was fresh and flavorful not mayo based but the fish and chips platter was disappointing. The portion of fish was tiny, more like a few fish sticks than a full filet, and it wasn’t cheap. Since it’s breaded, you’re getting even less actual fish than it looks like. For the price, I expected much better portions. I wouldn’t go back on purpose.

Great fish dinners. Some of the sides are fantastic (salads, smothered fries), a few were meh (crab cake, coleslaw).
