Khao Hom is an unexpectedly upscale Thai restaurant in downtown Hayward, offering traditional and creative Thai-inspired dishes. We started with the Papaya Salad (shredded papaya, carrots, green beans, tomatoes, and peanuts in sweet fish sauce), the Larb Gai (minced chicken salad), and Fried Spring Rolls, filled with glass noodles, cabbage, and carrots. Another classic was the Pad Kee Mao, wide rice noodles stir-fried with meat and vegetables in a slightly spicy chili sauce. The real highlights of the restaurant, however, were the Chef's Specials. One of their most unique dishes was the Crabby Tom Yum Omelette, a runny omelette with a filling of lump crab meat, all drowned in a mild, creamy tom yum sauce with mushrooms and served over rice. The Hor Mok Seafood was made of mixed seafood (mussels, scallops, shrimp, squid) cooked with cabbage and bell peppers in a spiced coconut milk "custard"; and the Khao Soi was a coconut milk curry broth with egg noodles topped with pickled mustard greens, red onion, lime, crispy noodles, and a gigantic beef rib served on the bone! Everything was flavorful and delicious, but the standout dish was the Roti Gai Tod, featuring a crunchy, salty fillet of breaded fried chicken, served with jasmine rice and roti, along with a coconut curry dipping sauce with potatoes. The combination of the crunchy fried chicken, crispy roti, and spiced coconut curry made it a truly special dish. The bright and open interior creates a pleasant atmosphere for brunch or lunch. While the food is delicious, some customers have experienced slow service, with appetizers arriving after main courses. Despite this, friendly staff and unique fusion dishes make Khao Hom a recommended spot in downtown Hayward. To improve the experience, the restaurant might consider addressing issues with mosquitoes and flies. Recent reviews mention great food, friendly service, and a lively ambiance, with one customer praising the crab omelet and short rib Benedict, noting the generous portions and prompt service.
