These colder months has had me thinking about Mexico, and the delicious smell of coffee that usually pairs perfectly with it. While reminiscing, I couldn't help but get inspired and write about one of my simplest pleasures in my hot beverages: Café de Olla. One of my closest best friends - who happens to be Latino - whom I can call 'mi hermano' ('my brother') - used to say that "hasta las almas en pena encuentran un poco de consuelo en una taza de café de olla [even lost souls find a bit of comfort in a cup of Café de Olla]" and I can understand why. With its unmistakable flavor of cinnamon, pilóncillo, and spices - along with the touch of earthy flavors/smells invigorating the room where this drink is prepared, any heart feels comforted. If you do not know what I mean when I mention this drink, you are really missing out on a true delicacy. Café de Olla is one of those pleasures that one must try at least once in a lifetime. A delight that any Mexican is proud of for its original flavor; it has an aroma that will stop time and make you feel like you are in a little cabin in the middle of the woods, walking in a Pueblo Mágico, or at home sitting & just chilling - enjoying the art of simply doing nothing. The name Café de Olla, translated as 'pot coffee', is a reference to the way it is prepared: because you do not need a fancy coffee machine to prepare it, just a stove and a pot. Traditionally it is made in a clay pot and should be offered in cups or jars made of this same material. Going back to my experience at Vivoz, it provided Hayward a different perspective on coffee - in addition to them being a 100% Plant-Based Café, that is a welcome sight for those that need dairy-free beverages! They took over the former defunct Early Bird Coffee Co., housed in the front of The Dirty Bird Lounge, with tables & chairs for those seeking some solace, as well as getting the need to work away and/or do some studying, while sippin' on Latino-inspired beverages to comfort one's soul. They also provided fresh-baked pastries, for those wanting something to munch on while having their coffee. Sad to say that according to their Instagram handle, they will be closing up shop soon on Sunday, February 25, 2024 & will be moving on as a business from a brick & mortar to a coffee cart model - so they wouldn't totally be going out of business! Whew! Make sure you inquire with them, should you need something to pair up with your taquizas! If you find yourself in the heart of Downtown Hayward, come check 'em out & get your last shot at their scrumptious conchas & creamy Vivochatas while it lasts!

My favorite coffee spot in Hayward! My service is always great. The ambiance is nice and intimate as Vivoz is in the front half of Dirty Bird. My usual is the vivochata latte & it's the perfect balance of horchata and strong coffee. My cup of tea for sure! The drinks are consistently good here and I come here once a week lol. I've tried their vegan conchas before as well & the coffee one was IT! I couldn't even tell it was vegan and I was amazed! Not dry at all. Soft and fluffy. Super delicious conchas! I love it & I'd highly recommend coming here :)

Delicious vegan coffees and pastries with a Mexican flair. I have been there twice now and they do not dissapoint. Further to the back of a the cafe is the entrance to the Dirty Bird Bar. Interesting concept.

We decided to make a quick drink stop at Vivoz today since we were on our way to the local garden in Hayward. Although I've somewhat glanced at this place on Yelp beforehand, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they're all (I think) plant-based! I can select anything on the menu and not have to worry about dairy, woohoo! I opted for their large Black Sesame Latte (oat milk base) while my partner got their Vivochata. It seemed like they sold some vegan pastries as well, but by the time we got there, there was only cinnamon buns left, so we didn't get any of their pastries. Service was nice and quick, and our order was ready in no time. People rave about the Black Sesame Latte here, but I think I would have enjoyed a stronger black sesame flavor more so than a stronger coffee flavor. There's definitely black sesame mixed into the drink, but flavor gets overwhelmed by the coffee. People's got their own preference as to which they prefer more, so this is just my preference. It's still a really good drink. Maybe some sweetener would have enhanced the flavor a bit, but I opted for unsweetened. I also tried my partner's Vivochata, and I'd say that was a pretty good vegan Horchata. Could just bit a tad less sweeter. All in all, a pretty happy find! I would come back to try some of their other popular drinks!

Such good coffee and the baristas are SO helpful and sweet. They are so transparent with the nutritional information as well, noting that mostly everything is sugar-free as it is all sweetened with monkfruit or zero-sugar sweeteners. Amazing spot, especially if you're cutting sugar, on Keto diet, or living a lifestyle that you need to be sugar-conscious. The vivochata is the best, and the cafe de olla is so good. Thank you VIVOZ! We love you

I can't believe it took me so long to get here! This place is great; the aesthetic and vibes are amazing. The coffee is fantastic and so are the yummy treats. I wish I took pictures, I was just wrapped up in the experience. I'm so happy to have a place like this in Hayward, it truly is a gem and I can't wait to go back.

Vivoz, a noteworthy vegan coffee establishment, distinguishes itself with a range of unique and well-crafted beverages. The oat milk latte, in particular, stands out as an exemplary offering, demonstrating a commendable commitment to quality plant-based alternatives. Complementing the exceptional drinks is a thoughtfully designed interior, providing a pleasant ambiance for patrons to enjoy their coffee. In summary, Vivoz proves to be a standout destination for vegan coffee enthusiasts with friendly service. With a focus on unique and skillfully prepared beverages, highlighted by the excellence of the oat milk latte, coupled with an inviting interior, it offers a commendable experience for those seeking high-quality plant-based coffee options.

The drinks are so good, I've tried the vivochata and the matcha and going to try the black sesame drink next. The food is pretty yummy for being plant based and the only criticism I have is the menu is a kind of hard to read due to the font being used. They have a point system where you enter your number so that's a nice bonus if you come here often. The baristas are always really nice considering there's usually only one person taking orders and the making drinks too so shoutout to them.

My new favorite cafe! Unique coffee options with Mexican influences, such as the Cafe de Ollo (a sweet black coffee brew from Oaxaca). My favorite is the black sesame latte which not many cafes in this region sell. It’s well done here. My one wish is that they had soy milk, though they offer oat and almond milk. Also a good rotation of food, such as different flavored mini loaves and conchas (even an Ube concha!).

Black Sesame Latte Large - $6.25 Cafe de Olla Large - $6.25 Never tried drinks quite like the Cafe de Olla before, it's kinda light on the coffee taste so I would be careful ordering it if you're looking for something more traditional. Nevertheless, it's really tasty so I'd recommend trying it! It has a nice warm cinnamon taste without being overpowering, overall the flavor is very gentle and mellow, perfect for a rainy day. My gf ordered the black sesame latte, it's among one of the best black sesame drinks I've ever tried and I don't even like black sesame normally. As opposed to the cafe de olla, this drink is really strong, both in the sesame and the coffee flavor. And it's not very grainy either which is usually a problem I have with these drinks. Interior has a ton of character, you can really tell the owner has a lot of passion for this cafe. Also they offer free samples of all the drinks so you can try before ordering!

Vivoz coffee shop reinvented. Especially one that has good quality chocolate and a nice vibe. Definitely needed in the bland scene of downtown HaywardOrdered the mocha and cinnamon roll and both hit their targets. Hoping their business picks up as this is such a better alternative to the other chain coffee shops in the same block. And once they start getting more popular I hope they keep more varieties of pastriesGood luck fellas!
