I cannot believe this location actually closed!! We came here when it was opened in 2018, on a hot mid summer day. We passed through a sketchy neighborhood to get here, but you know what they say? Best tasting food is always found in a sketchy neighborhood. We parked in a spacious parking lot, greeted by a lots of smiles from the staff, the clean restaurant had a clean restroom and lots of dining space. This restaurant would've done well during the Covid-19 pandemic if it required social distancing. My family is actually from El Salvador, so seeing this restaurant was appealing and was there go-to. Upon gazing at the menu, we ordered Platanos, lots of Pupusas, scrambled eggs and had lots of traditional Salvadoran sour cream on the side. We enjoyed our dining experience so I'm sad to see this place go!

Imagine walking in through a door to a restaurant and immediately being met with a sense of home and warmth. Smiles on the faces on the staff when they see you and they say "Hola corazí³n ¿Qué puedo hacer por ti?" (Hello my love, what can I do for you?) as they lead you a table and take your order. If this seems like an experience you would enjoy, El Cerro Verde is worth the time. The distinct little building, located in an unlikely spot behind a Starbucks, is a little hut resembling the chozas that you would see on a mountain in El Salvador-- vastly different from its surrounding buildings, but making its presence known. When you walk into El Cerro Verde there is a distinct smell of warm cheese, masa and various aguas frescas either being freshly made or served. The restaurant is very cozy but by no means uncomfortable. You'll notice that the cross back chairs are arranged in rows and seated at polished green marble tables throughout the restaurant. Your order will be taken by one of the sweet smiled ladies working that enjoys making sentimental small talk while jotting down your order. However, if you don't particularly know what you're in the mood for, that's perfectly fine, there is no pressure on your server waiting. She will automatically list popular items and what they taste like, and will definitely mention her personal favorites. The amount of time it takes for your food to arrive seems to fly by when you take the time to relish in the loving atmosphere around you. The beige walls of the restaurant instill a sense of warmth, as well as the sound of the sizzling ingredients coming from the kitchen with a homey aroma that gently floats around the restaurant. When you look around the restaurant, you can see families sitting and conversing and the gentle coos of parents doting on children. When the food arrives, it's served on plain beige plastic plates that construct the perfect canvas for the foods color to truly pop. The dishes are served with a smile and the aroma makes your stomach excited and taste buds jump for joy. El Cerro Verde is mostly known for its specialty of pupusas, a traditional Salvadoran dish of dough wrapped around a cheese center. Some restaurants serve it with extra cheese that rushes the dough or little cheese that makes the dish seem plain, but not El Cerro Verde. They have been able to master the perfect dough-to-cheese ratio with no trace of grease on the pupusas, which is no easy task. You could eat the pupusas as is with a hot fluffy outside that cradles the melting salty and slightly crunchy cheesy inside, however you can add more flavor to your meal. The pupusas are served with a vinagrized array of various vegetables and herbs called Curtido that you are able to put on your doughy and cheese delicacy that bring's out a savory acidity complementing the hidden flavor and warmth of the cheese that would otherwise go unnoticed. The Curtido is often paired with a homemade sauce that is orange in color and taste slightly sweet that paired with the savory of the curtido and slight saltiness of the pupusas pairs as though they were always meant to be. Its very easy to get consumed in a meal; however, don't forget about your beverage. El Cerro Verde offers three types of aguas frescas, including Jamaica which is Salvadoran prepared and sweetened hibiscus water, Salvadoran Horchata which is brownish in color and provides a more cinnamon yet less sweet taste than Mexican horchata and Ensalada, which is a Salvadoran prepared syrupy sweet fruit drink that pairs well with all foods and serves as a fun pastime for children who try to catch the fruit with their straws. El Cerro Verde is not just the place you want to go for a pleasant bite to eat but a place where you can feel the tenderness of familial love surrounded by strangers, a home kitchen away from home that warms your heart, stomach and pleases your appetite. They're pupusas are great but they seriously need to fix their yelp page hours. On their page it says they open at Noon on sundays so my boyfriend and I stood out there for half an hour and there was people working inside who saw us standing there but didn't bother to say anything. We called three times and the third time they pick up and go oh sorry we're open during the week, right now we're just doing maintenance. Personally I think that's crappy customer service on their behalf to never have said anyth

Everything is good here. But they recently closed down the Inglewood location...so now the Hawthorne location is 5 times busier than they already were.

Great Salvadorans food, very authentic fair prices, food is all homemade and their sweet cheese bread called "Quesadillas " are to die for

I was hesitant to leave a bad review , and that's because I'm all about supporting my fellow Latin American people. But the service that we received was insanely slow!! As you walked in you didn't know if there was a line to order to go, to sign in the waiting list. The staff seemed all over the place. They didn't have the proper system or rhythm therefore the customers looked confused, hungry and irritated. After waiting 45 minutes we finally sat at our table. 15 minutes later they take down our order. And another 35 minutes later we received half of our drinks! I clearly understand that the food is made to order. Buy the drinks don't have an excuse, that should be a priority especially if you know customers have been patiently waiting for over an hour. Food was great but with a dry mouth and no refills I must say it was hard to swallow those popusas. This message is to Management please rethink restaurant layout. You really need to have a to go line for pick ups and orders. This will definitely help your buisness!

I came here just to pick up an Order for uber eats. I would've considered returning because the restaurant is clean & the food looks good. But upon my arrival I wasn't greeted. A family walked in after me and they were greeted right away. I asked the women behind the counter for a specific order she immediately said "just give me a minute" & walked away. Her attitude was horrible! Definitely won't be back here. I came back here for another uber wats order and the ladies were a lot mire friendly this time around. So I added two stars. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for the first time I came. Maybe the lady that was snappy with me was having a bad day.

This is by far the worst pupuseria I have ever tried. This place gave my husband and myself food poisoning after eating their pupusas. Workers looked over worked and stressed. Super unprofessional to be sweating while charging a customer. And to top it off wiping it with his finger and launching it to the floor. Will not come here again.

I forgot to take a picture, but everything was delicious. I had a chicken tamale and bean and cheese pupusa. Tamale nice and juicy. Pupusa the same. I liked that more but i like pupusas more than tamales in general. Only thing is that they only offer a large bottle of jamaica. It's good and has enough to take home and save, but i didn't want to spend that much on a drink. $3.50. At the same time I was craving it. Otherwise, everything was great, clean place, nice employees, etc. Oh and good portion sizes. No leftovers (maybe bc I'm a little greedy) but one tamale and pupusa were definitely enough to fill me up.
