While I have the highest opinion of Village House Kalina (more on this soon), I would kindly request that Yelp reviewers stop posting their experiences from years ago. It gives the impression that this unique business -- which I believe is the only one that serves Ukrainian food in San Diego -- is still open and flourishing, lulling potential customers into complacency that "I'll try it when I have the time." This is a late review, but a review nonetheless. I came here a few years ago when I was still in college and visiting SD during a break. Now that I've been settled in SD for a few years and have been slowly eating my way around the county, I have to say that there seems to be a dearth in Ukrainian/Russian/Eastern European restaurants. Village House Kalina serves mostly Ukrainian food, and it is delicious. I have eaten here on many occasions, and I find the quality of the food is consistent. The chicken stroganoff, dumplings, and the homemade honey or walnut cake are my recommendations. The weekday lunch special is quite a deal: a three course meal for only $11. The only negative is that some of the food servers make guests feel a bit guilty if they do not finish all of their soup (if you leave some broth remaining)....read full review
