Homareya is a cozy izakaya on Long Beach's Promenade, offering traditional Japanese cuisine. The atmosphere is perfect for a date night or casual gathering. The menu features cold appetizers, grilled skewers, fried treats, and rotating specials. The 6 piece nigiri sushi is a highlight, described as delicious, fresh, and the best dish, with the omakase plate also highly recommended. For skewers, the pork belly is consistently praised as the best, tender and perfectly flavored, while the chicken thigh, wagyu harami, tsukune chicken meatball, and wagyu skewer are also excellent. The chicken liver and chicken heart skewers are delicious for those who enjoy offal. Other standout dishes include the white fish ponzu, spicy kara tekka hand rolls, jewel handrolls, and the matcha brownie with azuki ice cream. The shredded cabbage and cucumber salad is refreshing, and the fried calamari is good with a light batter. However, some items can be inconsistent; the scallop skewer is sometimes overcooked or underwhelming, and the quesadilla Homareya style can be disappointing. The tofu is flavorless and the focaccia is fine but nothing extraordinary. Service is friendly though sometimes clunky as it is a new restaurant. Prices are generally fair, though drinks can be pricey with a nice selection of sake and unique options like peach oolong beer. Reservations are recommended for this fantastic and amazing experience that transports diners straight to Japan.
