The OG sourdough is mouth watering. Some of the best bread in town. Not to mention a fantastic mission - the pay what you can model feeds a lot of hungry folks

Way overpriced
not sure if there have been some changes in the kitchen or something but their stuff hasn’t tasted as good lately. i had an incredible chocolate glazed berliner a couple months ago from here and hadn’t seen them since, so i was very excited to get one today and it was… meh.
My advice is to get there as early as you can because they sell out. They’re that good! They make the best focaccia I’ve ever had! Super spongy and flavorful. A great local gem.
Best bread in Los Angeles! It’s freshly made , all breads are vegan as well, organic sourdough and you can tell it’s made with love. They sell it out of a retro vintage looking van in the heart of Los Feliz. I got the organic country white sourdough and the OG organic sourdough that’s made with rye. They both are fantastic loaves of bread , soft in the middle with an amazing outer crust. The white sourdough is perfect for making pizza breads or putting jams on. The OG sourdough is great for caprese sandwiches or whatever you want to throw on it. They also sell doughnuts that are called Berliners , a German doughnut, didn’t try them this time will for sure next time. They also have a vegan honey sesame sourdough that they were sold out of and sourdough with sesame, highly recommend this place.
This bakery is in a van parked on the corner of Hillhurst Ave & Finley Ave. Not many options when I went, but they are so good! Pricey but worth a try. Updated from previous review on 2023-06-28

Some of the best bread I’ve ever had. I stopped coming here because they now expect a tip in top of the $17 bread. It makes me feel like an j*** when I don’t tip places. I always thought that tipping was associated with a services not really for products… Are the owners not paying the people working in the van and passing it off to the customers? Idk. I go to tartine now. Which isn’t as good but the interaction is less awkward.
The best and the only!!!

On February 14, 2023, I finally tried their OG sourdough (rye) bread & it was very good. It was very moist and the crust wasn’t too hard either. It was perfect. I will definitely come back to try some others.
Bread was very good, but I don't think I can spend $17 on one loaf again.

Blackforest Bakery is the Treasure of Los Angeles. Thanks a thousand times for the Berliner and Bakery Loaf of Sourdough. Thanks for Being Vegan. Thanks for Having a Bounty of Bakery Bites to Beautify my Saturday Morning! Thanks for having an equality-minded doubt-defying pay what you can, pay it forward program promoting the ethical and egalitarian values inherent in true veganism. Thank you for your service! ???? In addition, this is the best loaf of bread I've ever tasted, and the Berliner was of no minor significance that I do not hesitate to declare it the best in the Western Hemisphere. If I could live a hundred years to eat these twice a week, I would hold my life in high regard for the experience. Carpe Diem! Thank You, Black Forest Bakery!!
The best bread I’ve had in LA so far!
