Bonsai Coffee & Bar is a very busy cafe, often packed with people working, studying, or hanging out with friends, especially on weekends and due to its location close to universities. The atmosphere is nice and peaceful, decorated with artificial bonsai, though the table setting is close together and the music or noise can be a bit loud. It is a great place to study, but it can be difficult to get a table.
The drinks are of good quality and a highlight for many. Bonsai has one of the best matcha in LA, praised for its bold and umami flavor. Popular items include the Matcha X Matcha, a version of a Matcha Latte with a Matcha Cream Top, the cream top matcha, and the hojicha with cream top. The matcha and hojicha aren’t too sweet nor milky, and the cream top is described as insane, very rich, and thick. The Pandan Coconut Matcha is a lighter alternative, and the Vietnamese coffee is also great. The food is considered decent. Service can be unfriendly. Parking is street parking only, with spots available a few blocks away.
