Camelia, located in the Arts District, offers a Japanese-French blended menu with dishes like tuna avocado plate, Japanese spaghetti, dry-aged cheese burger, and beef cheek in red wine wasabi sauce. The restaurant features a sophisticated and intimate space with low lighting and a decor that is very pretty, reminiscent of a bistro along a street in New York. The ambiance is warm, with lovely French pop music playing in the background, and indoor and outdoor seating options, including heat lamps. Service is top-notch and attentive, with servers explaining each dish and providing good recommendations. The menu includes innovative dishes with an Asian spin, such as Uni Otoro Toast and a Croque Madame made with shokupan bread, fried ham in katsu style, and melted Gruyère cheese. Some dishes, like the Uni Otoro Toast, are very impactful and fresh, while others like the spaghetti bolognese and beef cheek may not stand out as much. The beef cheek was tender but overpowered by wasabi chutney, which detracted from the enjoyment. Desserts like Daifuku Mochi, with its chewy mochi skin dusted in matcha and filled with spiced pears and yuzu mascarpone, are delicious and light. Overall, Camelia provides a unique dining experience with innovative, fresh food, though some fusion dishes could push the boundaries further. The space is gorgeous, the food is interesting, and it is worth a visit despite some challenges with parking and cramped seating during busy times.
